Forty-three high school seniors who took part in an exam-taking competition in Chengdu, China, officially outperformed the math robot they were up against. The robot, developed by China's Chengdu Zhun Xing Yun Xue Technology Co. received an average score of 93, while the class received an average score of 106, the Huffington Post reports. The AI score is on par with the company's estimate of between 90 and 110. According to the Chengdu Economic Daily, the AI and the students, a liberal arts class from Shishi Tianfu High School, were all required to complete the test in a two-hour timeframe. "I think although it's a math test, we won it because of our literary skills," She Yujia, a student participant who scored 135 on the exam, told HuffPo.

Getting through in the age of automation and Artificial Intelligence - The Economic Times

NASSCOM's flagship event India Leadership Forum in Mumbai in February this year brought together global leaders on the theme, 'Re-imagine, not re-engineer'. This clearly suggested that the future lies in our ability to innovate and automate. During the event I interacted with award winners of the NASSCOM Digital India contest and came across innovations addressing the biggest challenges the country faces in healthcare and education. A team from Phillips demonstrated a low cost device which could transmit ECGs from rural locations to specialised health care hospitals for expert review. In pilots conducted with KMC Manipal, 380 ECGs were read, and cardiologists found 86 ECGs (22.6%) with abnormal findings.

Preferred Networks teaches robots to collaborate through deep learning

When Junichi Hasegawa of Sony first met the two young creators of Preferred Networks, there was something familiar about them. They each possessed, in his view, the spark and talent of Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka, the founders of Sony itself. Shortly afterwards, in 2011, Hasegawa, who was in the team developing the PlayStation games console, opted to join the tiny start-up that later became Preferred Networks. Sony was languishing under heavy losses from its once-mighty consumer electronics products and Hasegawa had the opportunity to move on. "Instead of rebuilding Sony, I felt it was faster to build a second Sony," he says.

Tata Consultancy Services polled 835 executives across 13 global industry sectors in four regions of the world, finding that 84% of companies see the use of AI as "essential" to competitiveness, with a further 50% seeing the technology as "transformative." Exploring the views and actions of decision makers from global companies with average revenues of $20 billion, the study revealed AI is spreading across almost all areas of a company. The biggest adopters of AI today are, not surprisingly, IT departments, with 67% of survey respondents using AI to detect security intrusions, user issues and deliver automation. However, by 2020, 32% of companies believe AI's greatest impact will be in sales, marketing or customer service, while 20% see AI's impact being largest in non-customer facing corporate functions, including finance, strategic planning, corporate development, and HR. Companies participated from a range of industries, including automotive, banking and financial services, energy, healthcare, life sciences, industrial manufacturing, and retail.

Germany's Flawed Plan to Fight Hate Speech by Fining Tech Giants Millions

WIRED

The way tech companies deal with online harassment and abuse is broken. YouTube allows anti-Semitism to stay live. Twitter waffles as targeted harassment runs rampant. Facebook takes down an iconic photo that shouldn't be banned. Now one German politician is tired of letting platforms make excuses.

Windows 10 updates: How to test new features before everyone else

The Independent - Tech

Microsoft is currently finalising a major new update to Windows 10 that looks set to arrive in April, but users can try it out ahead of its launch. The Creators Update will introduce a raft of new features, including Paint 3D, Beam game streaming, new accessibility features, including braille support, as well as a multitude of performance and security tweaks and enhancements. In order to get a taste of them before they officially arrive, Windows 10 users can join Microsoft's Windows 10 Insider Program. Doing so gives you access to all of the latest Windows 10 builds as soon as they're available, and you can help shape the future of the operating system by providing feedback on the new features. However, before joining the Windows 10 Insider Program, be aware that you'll be signing up to use unfinished pre-release software that might not work as it's supposed to.

Looking for insurance advice? Automated agents may offer you one - The Economic Times

Chatbots have now entered the world of the Indian financial services industry. Two life insurance companies, Birla Sun Life Insurance and HDFC Life, recently rolled out their own versions of chatbots. Among the banks, HDFC Bank has its own electronic virtual assistant or EVA. First, there was robo-advisory for those looking for automated advice and a platform to invest in mutual funds (MFs), and now chatbots suggest insurance policies and answer customer queries. Chatbots could very well be here to stay.

As Easy As ABC - Alphabet Is A Buy!

Just days later, we got our first hint Buffett himself was buying Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)! Followed shortly after by that bombshell CNBC interview (here's the transcript), where he revealed an $18 billion plus Apple investment*, the vast majority bought by him in January and recent months (and the rest by Todd and Ted in early-2016). What better confirmation of my assertion that value investors - even the greatest of them all, at 86 years of age - would be wise to pose such a question to themselves? In fact, I wonder if it's the largest stock investment ever made by a single investor (again, in terms of cost)? Sure, Todd, Ted, and Charlie did provide some inspiration and feedback here, but we can be sure Buffett never buys anything until he makes his own mind up! Thoughts?] Was I confident I'd see Buffett talking up an Apple position just weeks later? And maybe I chose it specifically as the largest, most obvious and controversial value stock out there. Not to mention, the head fake I pulled: While I did summarize its attractive fundamentals and valuation, my post clearly wasn't intended to be a detailed thesis. But hey, it was still the right question at the right time, so I'll take the kudos!
