Multitask Learning and Benchmarking with Clinical Time Series Data

Health care is one of the most exciting frontiers in data mining and machine learning. Successful adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) created an explosion in digital clinical data available for analysis, but progress in machine learning for healthcare research has been difficult to measure because of the absence of publicly available benchmark data sets. To address this problem, we propose four clinical prediction benchmarks using data derived from the publicly available Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-III) database. These tasks cover a range of clinical problems including modeling risk of mortality, forecasting length of stay, detecting physiologic decline, and phenotype classification. We formulate a heterogeneous multitask problem where the goal is to jointly learn multiple clinically relevant prediction tasks based on the same time series data. To address this problem, we propose a novel recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture that leverages the correlations between the various tasks to learn a better predictive model. We validate the proposed neural architecture on this benchmark, and demonstrate that it outperforms strong baselines, including single task RNNs.


China And Israel Tech Ties Grow Closer With $10M Deal For 3 AI Centers

China and Israel tech collaboration just grew a little closer again with the signing of an initial $10 million investment by a Chinese conglomerate and an institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with the University of Haifa to create three artificial intelligence centers in Beijing, Hangzhou and Haifa. The centers, which will house R&D facilities that will work toward commercialization of artificial intelligence, are financed by Chinese billionaire Zhou Qinghou, chairman of the privately owned Hangzhou Wahaha Group. The deal is a distance from the company's main business in beverages. The agreement takes a page out of the ground-breaking deal by Technion University and Cornell to develop joint campuses in China and New York City to help develop technological breakthroughs in a sort of New Tech Triangle. Under this new Israel-China deal, the institutes will select cutting-edge application technologies from University of Haifa and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' advance disciplines that can be industrialized, including vision tracking through mobile devices, image processing and big data for medical application, 3D image learning, chip technologies and biometric identification.


'Slack Meets Tinder' Matchpool Launching Crowdfund For Dating Scene Disruption

Matchpool, the incentive-based community platform that is touted as allowing anyone to open their own "matchmaking pool", is to launch a crowdfund campaign later this month in a move described by the blockchain start-up's CEO and co-founder Yonatan Ben Shimon, a former hedge fund manager, to disrupt the dating scene on a "global scale." In the run up to the start of the crowdfund, which is scheduled to commence on March 25, the company has also announced that Hermione Way, Tinder's former head of European communications, brand consultant and digital marketeer, has joined the Matchpool advisory board. As an advisor, Way who has appeared on has appeared on media channels including BBC World News, NYTimes, Wall Street Journal, and TechCrunch, will provide guidance on global communications strategies while the company works to modernize the centuries-old matchmaking profession. Dating services as a market, which comprises segments spanning online dating websites, dating apps and matchmaking and dating coaches, has been estimated recently to be a $2.5 billion business in the U.S. alone according to a report by Marketdata Enterprises Inc. Online services are cited to account these days for around 70% of the market's value. Whilst at Tinder, which is part of Nasdaq-quoted Match Group Inc. that also owns dating platforms like OKCupid and Match, she helped grow the brand across the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, Spain and Italy.

Robot probe finds lethal 11 sieverts in water near bottom of Fukushima reactor 1 vessel

FUKUSHIMA – A radiation level of 11 sieverts per hour has been detected in tainted water inside a reactor containment vessel at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. said Tuesday. The reading was measured in a survey using a robot on Sunday at a point some 30 cm above the bottom of the containment vessel of the plant's reactor 1. This is the highest radiation level detected in water inside the containment vessel. If exposed to this level of radiation, a person likely would die in about 40 minutes. The survey showed accumulation of sandy substances at the bottom, but Tepco said it does not believe they are melted nuclear fuel.


Samsung Galaxy S8's new AI assistant Bixby wants you to never have to touch your screen again

Samsung has announced Bixby, its artificial intelligence assistant, ahead of the launch of the Galaxy S8. It's expected to be one of the phone's biggest new features, and Samsung hopes it will trigger an enormous shift in user behaviour. As has been rumoured, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 will have a dedicated Bixby button, which users can push in order to launch the voice assistant. Bixby is designed to make Samsung's devices more "natural and intuitive" to use, according to the company. It will initially only work with a handful of pre-installed apps, but Samsung says it will support almost every task the app is capable of performing, entirely through spoken commands. The Argentinian pontiff was recording a video message for World Youth Day, which takes places on 9 April. "Many people say that young people are distracted and superficial," he said. Still, we should acknowledge our need to reflect on our lives and direct them towards the future. Apple bought Siri in 2010, and its co-founders Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer and Chris Brigham left the company in 2012 to build a better version of Siri that could connect to other services on a phone, and not just refer queries that it didn't understand to the Web. That's what Samsung is now promising Bixby will be able to do, claiming it will be better than other digital assistants like Siri or Google Assistant because of how it can link more deeply with apps on your phone.
