Automatic Extraction of Commonsense LocatedNear Knowledge

LocatedNear relation is a kind of commonsense knowledge describing two physical objects that are typically found near each other in real life. In this paper, we study how to automatically extract such relationship through a sentence-level relation classifier and aggregating the scores of entity pairs from a large corpus. Also, we release two benchmark datasets for evaluation and future research.

But is it possible to convert a two dimensional image to a 3D object and make it "come alive" with artificial intelligence? Let us dive into a research project developed in Japan. Mesh rendering gives up exceptional objects by constructing it with the help of neural networks. This process usually involves conversion of a 2D image into 3D by overlaying the image over a 3D object. It is then redefined with the backward pass of 3D rendering and then pushed through a neural network.

Since Madame Tussaud first toured her collection of waxworks in the late 18th century, the famous faces on show have remained steadfastly static. But a new generation of animatronic models which identify and interact with visitors are on the horizon after the Shanghai branch took delivery of its first robotic celebrity. A life-like robot of Chinese superstar Jing Boran of Monster Hunt and his CGI companion Wuba have been created by Cornish robotics firm Engineered Arts, the same team which animated King Kong's face in the film Kong: Skull Island. It is Madame Tussaud's first intelligent figure which not only moves but senses people and changes its behaviour based on its surroundings.


iPhone SE 2 Leak Suggests Device Will Feature Notch, Face ID

Rumors about the iPhone SE 2 have been circulating for some time now and another controversial one has surfaced online. A phone case maker believes that Apple's second-generation iPhone SE will arrive with a bezel-less design and a display notch that's similar to the one on the iPhone X. Case maker Olixar is now letting consumers pre-order its screen protector for the iPhone SE 2 through the online store Mobile Fun. Olixar's product listing not only shows the screen protector, but also a render of how the upcoming device could look like. Surprisingly, the iPhone SE 2 depicted in the listing shows that it will have a bezel-less design and a notch on its display like the iPhone X. The renders for the iPhone SE 2 are said to have been provided to Olixar "from a reliable source" in China, according to MacRumors.


An AI learns to spot tree species, with help from a drone

A consumer-grade drone can take photos of trees from above that are good enough to train a deep-learning algorithm to tell different species apart. Details: The team behind the project flew drone over a forest in Kyoto, Japan, to take photos and then divided some of them into seven categories: six types of trees and one called "others," for images that captured bare land or buildings. Results: After some fiddling, the algorithm (which was on an earth-bound computer) achieved 89 percent accuracy overall. Why it matters: Forest surveys typically use expensive systems outfitted with lidar or specialized cameras. This commercially available setup could be a cheap way to automate tree surveys, and the algorithm could be retrained to aid in disaster response, check pipelines for leaks, or help with other monitoring efforts that need to quickly cover a large area.


Dublin Tech Summit 2018: Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, and Privacy

I had the pleasure of attending this year's Dublin Tech Summit which took place at Dublin's Convention Centre on April 18th and April 19th. A number of famous faces were there, from the "e-celebrities" like YouTuber Casey Neistat to the geekier such as Jordan Evans of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). There was something for everyone and there was generally somebody that you had heard of giving a presentation. While Casey Neistat focused on his life growing up and how he became a YouTuber, Jordan Evans talked about the work JPL was currently undertaking and their hopes for the future. Both presentations came with a lot of "fun" attached – information laced in with some comedy.


Insurers urged to integrate artificial intelligence with human workforce - Business Insurance

Insurers must increase their efforts to integrate artificial intelligence efforts with an evolving workforce in order to take best advantage of the new technology, according to a report released Thursday by consultancy Accenture P.L.C. The report, Future Workforce Survey – Insurance: Realizing the Full Value of AI, said that artificial intelligence "is likely to transform the world of business." Artificial intelligence, the report said, must be seen as more than just a set of tools to make operations more efficient. "We believe AI, when synthesized with human ingenuity across the enterprise, will achieve exponentially more," the report said. Insurers which invest in such an AI and human-machine collaboration at the same rate of top-performing businesses could boost revenue by 17% and their employment 7%, on average, between 2018 and 2022, the report said.


US Chipmaker Intel Invests In 12 AI Startups, Including Three Chinese Firms

Venture arm of US Intel Corp., the world's second-largest microchip maker, has invested in Shanghai-based semiconductor firm Espressif Systems Pte., as well as two other Chinese artificial intelligence firms "who are shaping the future of AI." California-based Intel Capital will invest CNY458.9 million (USD72 million) in 12 innovative companies, and three of them are Chinese, the firm said at Intel Capital Global Summit 2018 held on May 8-10. The two other companies are Beijing-based cloud platform provider Alauda Inc. and Xiamen-based facial recognition software firm Reconova Technologies Co. Intel did not disclose the specific amount of investments. "These new startups who are shaping the future of AI, cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IOT), and chip technologies, are demonstrating Intel's development strategies centering on data, said Wendell Brooks, the senior vice president of Intel, as well as the president of Intel Capital, adding, "As the world is becoming increasingly interconnected, these technological fields will play a vital role." This funding batch reflects Intel Capital's new strategy to invest bigger amounts in startups that engage in such areas as AI, IOT, and cloud computing, where the US firm hopes its processors will play a central role in future.
