Puppy and cheetah cub make unlikely pair of step-siblings

New Scientist

Rozi was born in late February at Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, Australia, by emergency caesarean after her mother, Siri, went into labour early. Lions' record-breaking swim across channel captured by drone camera Siri never produced milk, and because Rozi was critically unwell for the first weeks of her life, the mother and daughter had to be separated. Rozi's two siblings were stillborn, so as the sole surviving cub, she faced the prospect of at least 18 months in isolation, leaving her ill-equipped to join the zoo's breeding programme. Zookeepers decided that if Rozi was going to develop and socialise normally, giving her the best chance of successfully breeding one day, she would need a step-sibling. Amazon's Alexa is accused of sexism after being unable to give the result of the Lionesses' World Cup semi-final because it didn't know the match had taken place

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Amazon's virtual assistant Alexa has been accused of sexism after being unable to respond to a question about the Lionesses' World Cup semi-final. British academic Dr Joanne Rodda asked Alexa for the result of Wednesday's match against Australia, which England won 3-1. But the supposedly'smart' technology didn't even know the match had taken place as it was only familiar with the men's game, the BBC reports. Astonishingly, when Dr Rodda asked'for the result of the England-Australia football match', Alexa said there was no such match. Amazon admitted the mistake was due to an'error' – although it didn't specify the cause – and that Alexa will get better at learning over time.

Amazon is making a HUGE change to Alexa's voice - here's what it means for your smart assistant

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Amazon has revealed a huge change that will make interacting with its smart speakers a lot less fun. The tech giant is retiring all three celebrity voices for its smart speakers – Samuel L. Jackson, Shaquille O'Neal and Melissa McCarthy. Amazon offered the superstar voices for $4.99 each as an alternative to Alexa, but these are no longer available for purchase on its website. Amazon, which released its fifth generation Echo Dot smart speaker last year, said customers can contact them for a refund. The feature was for US users only, although the tech giant does offer alternative voices for its smart assistant in the UK, such as Santa Claus.

Alexa trick lets you change your smart assistant's NAME and voice - but there's a catch

Daily Mail - Science & tech

While Alexa was once simply a woman's name, it has become widely associated with Amazon, since the tech giant launched a smart assistant with the same name back in 2014. Not only is the AI-powered system named Alexa, it is also the default'wake word' used to alert Amazon devices that an instruction or question will follow. This has led to women named Alexa becoming the butt of recurring jokes in which their name is shouted, followed by a command. Unbeknown to many Alexa users, a sneaky trick lets you change your smart assistant's name, and even voice. However, there is a catch - as it stands, you can only choose from a few Amazon-sanctioned alternatives.

Amazon Alexa settles the 'scone' debate for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Daily Mail - Science & tech

With their crumbly texture and smeared with clotted cream and jam, scones are a favourite treat with Brits across the UK. But despite dating back to the early 1500s, one question remains – how do you pronounce the word'scone'? Now, Amazon's smart assistant, Alexa, claims to have settled the debate, just in time for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Alexa claims'scone' should rhyme with'gone' rather than'own' when speaking the Queen's English. Users just need to say'Alexa, what's the correct way to pronounce scone?' to get the response: 'I pronounce it scone, to rhyme with gone, just like the Queen does.'

Ziggy: Alexa gets a new name and an updated voice. Here's how to change both.

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Amazon has rolled out some new ways to interact with its digital voice assistant, Alexa. The assistant available on Amazon devices such as Fire tablets and Echo speakers will now answer to a new name: Ziggy. Also, users can ask to Alexa to "change your voice" to someone with a more masculine or deeper voice. Although the assistant is always known as Alexa, users can update the wake words they use to get Alexa to answer, including "Amazon," "Echo" and "Computer." The new voice and wake words launched on July 15.

Amazon rolls out male voice for its smart speakers

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Amazon has started to roll out a male version of its smart assistant, called Ziggy, as an alternative to Alexa. Users of Amazon smart speakers in the US now have the option to choose from either Alexa or Ziggy when they're saying a vocal command. They can simply say'Alexa, change your voice' to hear the male voice coming out of their speaker, or go to settings in the Alexa app. There's a short snippet of Ziggy's voice – which has a generic but robotic-sounding American accent – to listen to here. Amazon's smart assistant powers the Echo speakers, including the spherical fourth generation Echo released last autumn (pictured) Note that this option is only available for US users for now.

Amazon finally gives Alexa a masculine-sounding voice

The Independent - Tech

Amazon has quietly added a masculine-sounding voice to Alexa. The voice assistant's feminine speech is in contrast to competitors from both Google and Apple, which each offer the option to choose different voices. It has led to concern over the gendered implications for offering the voice assistant with only a feminine-sounding voice. Now the company has finally added a masculine-sounding voice, which appears to be called "Ziggy". The change came amid a more loudly announced change that added voices such as Shaquille O'Neal, and was first spotted by The Ambient.
