The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 Standard Are Cheaper--but Still Not Cheap

WIRED

The electric vehicle tax credit is gone, and Tesla's new, more affordable models don't quite close the gap. For nearly two decades, CEO Elon Musk has promised Tesla would make a more affordable electric vehicle, to, as he put it in 2006, "help expedite the move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy." On Tuesday, Tesla announced a new Model Y and Model 3 Standard, versions of its popular compact SUV and sedan stripped of a few higher-end touches and features to bring the price down to $39,990 and $36,990, respectively. They're both about $5,000 cheaper than the Premium variants, which goes a ways--but not all the way--toward recouping the $7,500 tax credit canceled by the GOP-led Congress this past summer . The price point also puts Tesla's newest models firmly in the "more affordable" EV camp.

South Korea-hosted summit warns of AI risks to democracy

The Japan Times

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Monday called fake news and disinformation based on AI and digital technology threats to democracy, as some officials attending a global summit accused Russia and China of conducting malicious propaganda campaigns. Speaking at the opening of the Summit for Democracy being held in Seoul, Yoon said countries had a duty to share experiences and wisdom so that artificial intelligence and technology could be employed to promote democracy. "Fake news and disinformation based on artificial intelligence and digital technology not only violates individual freedom and human rights but also threatens democratic systems," Yoon said.

JooHee Yoon's "Drawing Hands with A.I. (After M. C. Escher)"

The New Yorker

Chatbots and image generators, newly on the rise, have sparked our imaginations--and our fears. As artificial-intelligence machines sharpen their ability to translate written prompts into images that accurately capture both style and substance, some visual artists worry that their specialized skills might be rendered irrelevant. Even so, the new technologies at our disposal broaden our understanding of the relationship between artist and work. In her cover for the April 24 & May 1, 2023, Innovation & Tech Issue, her first for the magazine, JooHee Yoon addresses the topic in a clever image that illustrates the reciprocity and the tension that can exist between artists and these high-tech tools (is the robot hand drawing the real hand, or vice versa?). Yoon's cover also demonstrates what makes artists unique: their ideas and their point of view. M. C. Escher (1898-1972), a Dutch graphic artist whose approach was an inspiration for Yoon, is a case in point.

N Korea drone entered presidential office no-fly zone: Military

Al Jazeera

A North Korean drone entered the northern end of a 3.7km (2.2 miles) radius no-fly zone around South Korea's presidential office in Seoul when it intruded into the country's airspace last month, South Korean military officials say. "It [the drone] briefly flew into the northern edge of the zone, but it did not come close to key security facilities," a military official told South Korea's Yonhap News Agency on Thursday. The drone was among five North Korean unmanned aerial vehicles that crossed the border and entered South Korean airspace on December 26, prompting South Korea's military to scramble fighter jets and attack helicopters. The military could not bring down the drones, which flew over South Korean territory for hours. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff had denied that one of the drones intruded into the presidential office no-fly zone, however, on Thursday confirmed that a drone had violated the northern end of the secure area but did not fly directly over the Yongsan area, where the office of President Yoon Suk-yeol is located.

Why are North Korea's drones spooking the South?

Al Jazeera

North Korean drones entered South Korean airspace on Monday for the first time since 2017 in the latest example of escalating tensions between the neighbouring countries. The South's military was caught off guard, drawing criticism on Tuesday from President Yoon Suk-yeol, who sought to assuage concerns by announcing his cabinet would fast-track plans for a special drone unit. South Korea's military fired warning shots and some 100 rounds from a helicopter equipped with a machine gun but failed to bring down any of the drones. The military said it chased one of the five drones over the greater Seoul area but did not fully aggressively engage with it out of concern for civilian safety. A defence ministry official confirmed a South Korean KA-1 fighter jet was involved in an accident while flying to counter North Korea's drones after departing its Wonju base in the country's north.

Time-aware topic identification in social media with pre-trained language models: A case study of electric vehicles

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Recent extensively competitive business environment makes companies to keep their eyes on social media, as there is a growing recognition over customer languages (e.g., needs, interests, and complaints) as source of future opportunities. This research avenue analysing social media data has received much attention in academia, but their utilities are limited as most of methods provide retrospective results. Moreover, the increasing number of customer-generated contents and rapidly varying topics have made the necessity of time-aware topic evolution analyses. Recently, several researchers have showed the applicability of pre-trained semantic language models to social media as an input feature, but leaving limitations in understanding evolving topics. In this study, we propose a time-aware topic identification approach with pre-trained language models. The proposed approach consists of two stages: the dynamics-focused function for tracking time-varying topics with language models and the emergence-scoring function to examine future promising topics. Here we apply the proposed approach to reddit data on electric vehicles, and our findings highlight the feasibility of capturing emerging customer topics from voluminous social media in a time-aware manner.

DIS conference paper from UBC shows what writers want (or don't want) from AI

#artificialintelligence

Writing tools over the millennia have facilitated the transmission of information and knowledge using countless types of mediums. But there has always been one key driver present in each and every one of those mediums: the infinitely creative human brain. Since advanced AI writing tools emerged on the scene, the brain factor seems to be less necessary. And as a result, the tech industry and writers themselves have been trying to figure out if AI writing tools are a good thing. Is it possible for AI tools to match what professional human writers can do on their own?

Artificial intelligence–the good and the not so good news

#artificialintelligence

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning is on the rise in many organizations across various fields. AI has the power to help businesses as well as employees by providing greater data insights, better threat protection, more efficient automation and other advances. However, if misused, AI can be a detriment to individuals, organizations, and society overall. For instance, "bots" are now rampant among social media, generating political propaganda or "fake news" intended to adversely impact or unjustly inflate people's opinions of various political candidates or personalities, thereby lowering the quality of discourse and public faith in reporting institutions. Therefore, it is imperative to establish moral guidelines and boundaries for the use of AI in business, and possibly beyond.

These Campaigns Hope 'Deepfake' Candidates Help Get Out the Vote

"From far away," he says, cracking a small grin. "I will cheer them both on from far, far away." The so-called AI Yoon--as in Artificial Intelligence Yoon--sounds, looks and gestures much like the real-life, conservative politician who is in a close race for South Korea's presidential election on Wednesday--although with much more mischievous humor. A sharp-tongued former prosecutor, the 61-year-old Mr. Yoon is new to politics and wanted an efficient way to reach out to the electorate. He needed to pursue young voters and sought a softer public image, and had just roughly three weeks to officially campaign by law.

However, individual players have few tools to help them learn about architectural style or how to improve the structure they are building. Ideally, players could utilize tools that capitalize on the large numbers of 3D models built by others to offer guidance for their particular project. We trained a neural network to classify a large collection of Minecraft models from various websites in terms of style (Ancient, Asian, Medieval, or Modern). We present experimental results demonstrating that our model can classify the user-indicated style of a structure with 55% accuracy. We further demonstrate use of this model to highlight nearest neighbors to a specific query structure. We have integrated these tools into a Minecraft Mod that allows players to classify their structure's style and view nearest neighbors in real-time.
