GREG GUTFELD: We've never seemed weaker, and the bad guys can see it

FOX News

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld gives his take on Iran's missile and drone attack against Israel on'Gutfeld!' Like I said, over the weekend, Iran launched an all-out attack on Israel, shooting as many as 300 drones and rockets at the Jewish state. By that metric, it was far more dangerous to be on the New York subway this weekend than strolling around Tel Aviv. Seriously, you have a better chance of getting hurt trying to take a burrito from Whoopi Goldberg. Give credit to Israel's air defense system, Iron Dome, which is the same nickname we gave Jesse Watters' head. Now, however, give the Iranians their due.

China's Hackers Keep Targeting US Water and Electricity Supplies

WIRED

An indictment from the US Department of Justice may have solved the mystery of how disgraced cryptocurrency exchange FTX lost over 400 million in crypto. The indictment, filed last week, alleges that three individuals used a SIM-swapping attack to steal hundreds of millions in virtual currency from an unnamed company. The timing and the amount stolen coincides with FTX's theft. Meanwhile, in a letter obtained by WIRED this week, seven lawmakers have demanded the DOJ stop funding biased and inaccurate predictive policing tools until the agency has a way to ensure law enforcement won't use them in a way that has a "discriminatory impact." In Florida, prosecutors say a 17-year-old named Alan Winston Filion is responsible for hundreds of swatting attacks around the United States.

FBI Chief Says He's 'Deeply Concerned' by China's AI Program

#artificialintelligence

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Thursday that he was "deeply concerned" about the Chinese government's artificial intelligence program, asserting that it was "not constrained by the rule of law." Speaking during a panel session at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Wray said Beijing's AI ambitions were "built on top of massive troves of intellectual property and sensitive data that they've stolen over the years." He said that left unchecked, China could use artificial intelligence advancements to further its hacking operations, intellectual property theft and repression of dissidents inside the country and beyond. "That's something we're deeply concerned about. I think everyone here should be deeply concerned about," he said.

FBI director warns about Beijing's AI program

#artificialintelligence

FBI Director Christopher Wray has warned about the national security threat posed by Beijing's AI program. During a panel at the World Economic Forum, Wray explained that Beijing's AI program "is not constrained by the rule of law". Wray says Beijing has "a bigger hacking program than any other nation" and will use machine learning to further boost the capabilities of its state-sponsored hackers. Much like nuclear expertise, AI can be used to benefit the world or harm it. "I have the same reaction every time," Wray explained.

We propose a model, Lexicographic Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (LPOMDP), which extends POMDPs with lexicographic preferences over multiple value functions. It allows for slack--slightly less-than-optimal values--for higher-priority preferences to facilitate improvement in lower-priority value functions. Many real life situations are naturally captured by LPOMDPs with slack. We consider a semi-autonomous driving scenario in which time spent on the road is minimized, while maximizing time spent driving autonomously. We propose two solutions to LPOMDPs--Lexicographic Value Iteration (LVI) and Lexicographic Point-Based Value Iteration (LPBVI), establishing convergence results and correctness within strong slack bounds. We test the algorithms using real-world road data provided by Open Street Map (OSM) within 10 major cities. Finally, we present GPU-based optimizations for point-based solvers, demonstrating that their application enables us to quickly solve vastly larger LPOMDPs and other variations of POMDPs.

We parallelize the Point-Based Value Iteration (PBVI) algorithm, which approximates the solution to Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs), using a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).

Staying Ahead On Artificial Intelligence Requires International Cooperation

#artificialintelligence

March 4, 2021--Artificial intelligence is present in most facets of American digital life, but experts are in a constant race to identify and address potential dangers before they impact consumers. From making a simple search on Google to listening to music on Spotify to streaming Tiger King on Netflix, AI is everywhere. Predictive algorithms learn from a consumer's viewing habits and attempt to direct consumers to other content an algorithm thinks a consumer will be interested in. While this can be extremely convenient for consumers, it also raises many concerns. Jaisha Wray, associate administrator for international affairs at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, was a panelist at a conference hosted Tuesday by the Federal Communications Bar Association.

The Morning After: Thursday, January 11th 2018

Engadget

CES 2018 day two was interrupted by a two-hour power cut. It was as ridiculous as you'd imagine: The world's biggest tech show meets a severe lack of electricity. Rest assured, we had time on either side to delve deeper into this year's biggest incoming tech. Possibly the worst thing that could happen at a tech show: Power went down across several halls at the Las Vegas Convention Center during this morning's CES at 11:15 PT. Multiple booths suffered power outages, including swaths of TVs at LG.

Hezbollah-Run TV Says to Broadcast Footage of Iranian Drone Tracking U.S. Plane Over Syria

U.S. News

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese Hezbollah's Al Manar TV channel said it would broadcast footage on Wednesday of an Iranian drone tracking a U.S. plane over southeastern Syria. It said it would air the footage during its news broadcast at 5:30 p.m. local time (1430 GMT). The announcement came as tensions grow between Washington and the military alliance that backs the Syrian government, including Iranian-backed forces. Not all U.S. presidents are missed once they leave the White House. President Donald Trump announced Wray's nomination for FBI director on Twitter.

Chatbots: What can they do and why is everyone talking about them?

#artificialintelligence

With technology pioneers Facebook and Microsoft both throwing their multibillion hats into the chatbot ring, it is safe to say the dawn of the bot is upon us. But "what is a chatbot?" we hear you confusedly cry. Well, you're going to hear a lot of noise about them and while the name might explain a lot, let us clear up the many unanswered questions of what they're for, how they work and whether they're the harbinger of the inevitable robopocalypse. In basic terms, a chatbot is a rudimentary form of artificial intelligence software that can converse with humans to answer questions or simply natter to us in as lifelike a manner as possible. The scope and complexity of a chatbot is determined by the creator's algorithmic aptitude.
