The Papers: 'AI will end work' and 'the wrath of Ciarán'

BBC News

Friday's papers focus on a diverse mix of topics. The Daily Telegraph reports on the second and final day of the AI summit at Bletchley Park, during which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak interviewed billionaire X and Tesla owner Elon Musk, who told the PM that technology will "do everything" in the future and that people would only need to work if they want to for "personal satisfaction". Mr Musk and Mr Sunak also discussed the tax system and whether robots can become "real friends".

'World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic' arrives on September 26th

Engadget

World of Warcraft Classic will return to the Wrath of the Lich King era on September 26th, Blizzard announced on Monday. WotLK is widely considered one of the best expansions in World of Warcraft's nearly 20-year history. Even if subsequent releases went on to expand the game's mechanics in more interesting and creative ways, few hit thematically in the way that WotLK did. For those who loved Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, it felt special to set foot on the shores of Northrend for the first time and explore the continent from a new perspective, and then eventually fight Arthas as part of the Icecrown Citadel raid. Ahead of the expansion's arrival, Blizzard is introducing a new leveling mechanic called Joyous Journeys.

AI has potential to ensure workplace equality, say experts

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been the talk of the town for a while, but it seems it can walk that talk too, with AI being potentially able to influence gender parity in the workplace. What AI can bring to the workplace was one of the topics explored and debated during'The Future of Work - Accelerating Gender Parity' Conference held by Harvard Business School (HBS) Club of India at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai on September 21. HBS faculty, industry leaders and other experts spoke at the conference to encourage the strategic importance of gender diversity in a changing environment. "Technology by itself is neutral, so technology can't favour women. But it can be utilized to mitigate the inherent biases against women. What we have started to see in organisations is that AI is being used to look at patterns, along with algorithms, to see if we are biasing some of our decisions, be it decisions concerning entry, promotions or the jobs that they get, against women," said Rekha Menon, Chairman and Senior Managing Director at Accenture in India, during the conference.

Werner Herzog's Internet Visionaries

The New Yorker

Werner Herzog's films have a common theme: they're about visionaries and dreamers. Sometimes his dreamers accomplish the impossible: he's made two films, for example--"Little Dieter Needs to Fly" and "Rescue Dawn"--about the American pilot Dieter Dengler, who escaped from a Laotian P.O.W. camp and, for twenty-three days, hiked barefoot through the jungle until he reached freedom. But Herzog is also fascinated by delusional dreamers. At the end of his 1972 film "Aguirre, the Wrath of God," the conquistador Aguirre stands on a raft in the Amazon. He's been searching, fruitlessly, for El Dorado; now all his men are dead, and he's speaking only to their corpses and some monkeys.
