The Knowledge Graph Track at OAEI -- Gold Standards, Baselines, and the Golden Hammer Bias

The Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) is an annual evaluation of ontology matching tools. In 2018, we have started the Knowledge Graph track, whose goal is to evaluate the simultaneous matching of entities and schemas of large-scale knowledge graphs. In this paper, we discuss the design of the track and two different strategies of gold standard creation. We analyze results and experiences obtained in first editions of the track, and, by revealing a hidden task, we show that all tools submitted to the track (and probably also to other tracks) suffer from a bias which we name the golden hammer bias.


Cross-Lingual Knowledge Validation Based Taxonomy Derivation from Heterogeneous Online Wikis

Creating knowledge bases based on the crowd-sourced wikis, like Wikipedia, has attracted significant research interest in the field of intelligent Web. However, the derived taxonomies usually contain many mistakenly imported taxonomic relations due to the difference between the user-generated subsumption relations and the semantic taxonomic relations. Current approaches to solving the problem still suffer the following issues: (i) the heuristic-based methods strongly rely on specific language dependent rules. (ii) the corpus-based methods depend on a large-scale high-quality corpus, which is often unavailable. In this paper, we formulate the cross-lingual taxonomy derivation problem as the problem of cross-lingual taxonomic relation prediction. We investigate different linguistic heuristics and language independent features, and propose a cross-lingual knowledge validation based dynamic adaptive boosting model to iteratively reinforce the performance of taxonomic relation prediction. The proposed approach successfully overcome the above issues, and experiments show that our approach significantly outperforms the designed state-of-the-art comparison methods.


Mixed-Initiative, Entity-Centric Data Aggregation using Assistopedia

Wikis allow for collaborators to collect information about entities. In turn, such entity information can be used for AI tasks, such as information extraction. However, these collaborators are almost exclusively human users. Allowing arbitrary software agents to act as collaborators can greatly enrich a wiki since agents can contribute structured data to complement the human-contributed, unstructured-data. For instance, agents can import huge volumes of structured data about entities, enriching the pages, and agents can update wiki pages to reflect real-time information changes (e.g., win-loss records in sports). This paper describes an approach that allows for both arbitrary software agents and human users to collaborate. In particular, we address three key problems: agents updating the correct wiki pages, policies for agent updates, and sharing the schema across collaborators. Using our approach, we describe creating entity-focused wikis which include the ability to create dynamic categories of entities based on their wiki pages. These categories dynamically update their membership based upon real-world changes.


Verification of Distributed Knowledge in Semantic Knowledge Wikis

Recently, the development of distributed knowledge systems has become more attractive due to the existence of new social semantic applications such as semantic knowledge wikis. User-friendly tools like wikis allow for a simple acquisition of formal knowledge, but also pose new challenges in knowledge engineering. In this paper, we reconsider classic criteria for verification in the light of a distributed knowledge base and we discuss novel anomalies that possibly occur during the collaborative development of a distributed knowledge base.
