Drone Mapping in Mozambique Helps Find Flood Victims, with AI Assistance
The Mozambique National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction (INGD) and World Food Programme (WFP) built the case for drones' capacity to give all responders an accurate picture of cyclone damage and flooding extent. Two back-to-back cyclones battered Mozambique in 2019, destroying more than 800,000 hectares of farmland during harvest season. The devastation to crops and livelihoods left nearly two million people facing acute food insecurity. The United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP) responded quickly, with two helicopters to ferry supplies and rescue stranded people. Given flooded roads, the air support was crucial but not nearly enough to distribute food and find stranded people across such a wide area of impact.

UN says aid truck hit by debris from Ethiopian drone strike
Debris from a drone strike in northern Ethiopia's Tigray region has damaged a truck carrying humanitarian aid and belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP) and injured the truck's driver, the United Nations agency said on Monday. The WFP said the drone strike on Sunday hit near an area called Zana Woreda in northwestern Tigray, as two trucks were delivering relief supplies to families displaced by the nearly two-year long conflict. "Flying debris from the strike injured a driver contracted by WFP and caused minor damage to a WFP fleet truck," the spokesperson said, adding it was not possible to say yet whether further distributions would be suspended in the area. "WFP calls on all parties to respect and adhere to international humanitarian laws and to commit to safeguarding humanitarian workers, premises and assets." The WFP truck was delivering food to internally displaced people as hundreds of thousands have been uprooted by renewed fighting since August 24 after a five-month ceasefire broke down.

Uber is providing vehicles to deliver supplies to war-torn areas of Ukraine
Uber is providing a fleet of small vehicles to help the UN deliver emergency food and water supplies to war-torn areas of Ukraine. As part of a collaboration with the UN's World Food Programme (WFP), Uber is using a custom-built version of its platform for relief efforts. Larger vehicles face issues reaching in-need Ukrainians in built-up areas, such as structural damage and high threat of Russian bombardment. So the initiative is using a fleet of smaller vehicles such as vans to send relief items from warehouses to people in need in densely populated parts of the country. Just like any ride on the Uber app, the progress of deliveries can be tracked in real-time through a special'private-label' version of its app platform.

How can Earth Observation and Artificial Intelligence help people in need?
In a world where we produce enough food to feed everyone, 811 million people still go to bed hungry each night; that's one in every 10 people worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and complex social-economic factors make the situation even more dire. By contrast, space, satellite, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have radically transformed humanity's ability to observe and model Earth's systems. It's inevitable then that we pose the question: how can Earth observation (EO) and AI help those in need? To find an answer, the Φ-lab at the European Space Agency, together with the World Food Programme (WFP) Innovation Accelerator, are launching the new EO & AI for SDGs Innovation Programme.

The Future Lies In Machine Learning, says Rogerio Bonifacio of UN WFP
In an exclusive interview with GeoBuiz, Rogerio Bonifacio, Head, Geospatial Anaysis Unit, UN World Food Program, says that The Future Lies In Machine Learning. The World Food Programme is involved in humanitarian systems. The usage of earth observation data has grown manifold in recent years, with more focus on medium- and low-resolution data streams. Geospatial technologies provides wide spatial coverage required to keep track of hazards. Each agency has separate, but coordinated usage of earth observation data.
