We would sell books by AI, says Waterstones boss
Waterstones would stock books created using artificial intelligence, the company's boss has said, as long as they were clearly labelled, and if customers wanted them. However, James Daunt, a veteran of the bookselling industry, said he personally did not expect that to happen. There's a huge proliferation of AI generated content and most of it are not books that we should be selling, he said. But it would be up to the reader. An explosion in the use of artificial intelligence, or AI, has prompted heated debate in the publishing industry, with writers concerned about the impact on their livelihoods.
Minecraft fan may be most committed hobbyist out there
Feedback comes across a YouTuber's efforts to build a large language model in Minecraft and is impressed at the scale of it - even if it doesn't quite live up to its promise to blow your mind in spectacular fashion There are few things Feedback appreciates more than a truly committed hobbyist: someone who happily spends months or even years building something that is of no practical use whatsoever, just to be able to look at it or play with it. For those who might be unfamiliar, Minecraft is an open-world game in which everything is made up of cubical blocks. Players dig into the ground to collect cubes of useful minerals, which they can use to build things. For instance, they might build a house so that the monsters that come out at night can't get them. Or they might go big.

Thinner, smaller gadgets are usually harder to repair due to their constrained space, but surprise, surprise, Apple's 5.6 mm-thin iPhone Air has earned a respectable 7/10 repair score from iFixit . A key factor in this was Apple relocating the logic board to create more space for the battery, making it easier to access.

Baroque breakout hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is unlike any game you've played before
Much has been made of the fact that the year's most recent breakout hit, an idiosyncratic role-playing game called Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, was made by a small team. It's a tempting narrative in this age of blockbuster mega-flops, live-service games and eye-watering budgets: scrappy team makes a lengthy, unusual and beautiful thing, sells it for 40, and everybody wins. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Sandfall Interactive, the game's French developer, comprises around 30 people, but as Rock Paper Shotgun points out, there are many more listed in the game's credits โ from a Korean animation team to the outsourced quality assurance testers, and the localisation and performance staff who give the game and its story heft and emotional believability.
OpenAI's for-profit plan includes a public benefit corporation
Following months of speculation, OpenAI has finally shared how it plans to become a for-profit company. In a blog post penned by its board of directors, OpenAI said Thursday it plans to transform its for-profit arm into a Public Benefit Corporation sometime in 2025. PBCs or B Corps are for-profit organizations that attempt to balance the interests of their stakeholders while making a positive impact on society. "As we enter 2025, we will have to become more than a lab and a startup -- we have to become an enduring company," OpenAI said, adding that many of its competitors are registered as PBCs, including Anthropic and even Elon Musk's own xAI. "[The move] would enable us to raise the necessary capital with conventional terms like others in this space."
With em Inside Out 2 /em , Does Pixar em /em Get Anxiety Right?
On this week's episode, the hosts excavate the psyche and begin by exploring Inside Out 2, a sophisticated children's movie that tackles the question on every kid's mind: How does one go about crafting a highly integrated ego? A bevy of new emotions join the motley crew living inside of our teenage protagonist Riley's mind, most notably Anxiety, voiced brilliantly by Maya Hawke. The film, a sequel to Pixar's 2015 Academy Award-winner, is filled with wisdom about developmental psychology, but finds itself in murky waters when indirectly tackling issues of free will and the power of the unconscious mind. Then, the panel probes the mind of Andrew McCarthy, whose recent documentary Brats (not to be confused with the new Charli XCX joint) reveals the inner workings of the "Brat Pack," a term coined by David Blum in a New York Magazine cover story published in 1985. A lifelong member of the "Brat Pack," McCarthy attempts to reconcile his relationship to the infamous label alongside others who fell under it, including Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez, in a surprisingly personal and peculiar documentary that's quite revealing of McCarthy โ either intentionally or not.
