The AI Data Center Boom Is Warping the US Economy
Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon are investing tens of billions in data centers. AI infrastructure is now a key driver of US economic growth. The amount of capital pouring into AI data center projects is staggering. Last week, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon reported their 2025 capital expenditures would total roughly $370 billion, and they expect that number to keep rising in 2026. The biggest spender last quarter was Microsoft, which put nearly $35 billion into data centers and other investments, equivalent to 45 percent of its revenue. Rarely, if ever, has a single technology absorbed this much money this quickly.

Conditional Deep Canonical Time Warping
Steinberg, Afek, Eisenberg, Ran, Lindenbaum, Ofir
Temporal alignment of sequences is a fundamental challenge in many applications, such as computer vision and bioinformatics, where local time shifting needs to be accounted for. Misalignment can lead to poor model generalization, especially in high-dimensional sequences. Existing methods often struggle with optimization when dealing with high-dimensional sparse data, falling into poor alignments. Feature selection is frequently used to enhance model performance for sparse data. However, a fixed set of selected features would not generally work for dynamically changing sequences and would need to be modified based on the state of the sequence. Therefore, modifying the selected feature based on contextual input would result in better alignment. Our suggested method, Conditional Deep Canonical Temporal Time Warping (CDCTW), is designed for temporal alignment in sparse temporal data to address these challenges. CDCTW enhances alignment accuracy for high dimensional time-dependent views be performing dynamic time warping on data embedded in maximally correlated subspace which handles sparsity with novel feature selection method. We validate the effectiveness of CDCTW through extensive experiments on various datasets, demonstrating superior performance over previous techniques.

Arc-Length-Based Warping for Robot Skill Synthesis from Multiple Demonstrations
Braglia, Giovanni, Tebaldi, Davide, Lazzaretti, André Eugenio, Biagiotti, Luigi
In robotics, Learning from Demonstration (LfD) aims to transfer skills to robots by using multiple demonstrations of the same task. These demonstrations are recorded and processed to extract a consistent skill representation. This process typically requires temporal alignment through techniques such as Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm, named Spatial Sampling (SS), specifically designed for robot trajectories, that enables time-independent alignment of the trajectories by providing an arc-length parametrization of the signals. This approach eliminates the need for temporal alignment, enhancing the accuracy and robustness of skill representation. Specifically, we show that large time shifts in the demonstrated trajectories can introduce uncertainties in the synthesis of the final trajectory, which alignment in the arc-length domain can drastically reduce, in comparison with various state-of-the-art time-based signal alignment algorithms. To this end, we built a custom publicly available dataset of robot recordings to test real-world trajectories.

An Empirical Survey of Data Augmentation for Time Series Classification with Neural Networks
Iwana, Brian Kenji, Uchida, Seiichi
In recent times, deep artificial neural networks have achieved many successes in pattern recognition. Part of this success is the reliance on big data to increase generalization. However, in the field of time series recognition, many datasets are often very small. One method of addressing this problem is through the use of data augmentation. In this paper, we survey data augmentation techniques for time series and their application to time series classification with neural networks. We outline four families of time series data augmentation, including transformation-based methods, pattern mixing, generative models, and decomposition methods, and detail their taxonomy. Furthermore, we empirically evaluate 12 time series data augmentation methods on 128 time series classification datasets with 6 different types of neural networks. Through the results, we are able to analyze the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and recommendations of each data augmentation method. This survey aims to help in the selection of time series data augmentation for neural network applications.

Time Series Data Augmentation for Neural Networks by Time Warping with a Discriminative Teacher
Iwana, Brian Kenji, Uchida, Seiichi
Neural networks have become a powerful tool in pattern recognition and part of their success is due to generalization from using large datasets. However, unlike other domains, time series classification datasets are often small. In order to address this problem, we propose a novel time series data augmentation called guided warping. While many data augmentation methods are based on random transformations, guided warping exploits the element alignment properties of Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and shapeDTW, a high-level DTW method based on shape descriptors, to deterministically warp sample patterns. In this way, the time series are mixed by warping the features of a sample pattern to match the time steps of a reference pattern. Furthermore, we introduce a discriminative teacher in order to serve as a directed reference for the guided warping. We evaluate the method on all 85 datasets in the 2015 UCR Time Series Archive with a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) and a recurrent neural network (RNN). The code with an easy to use implementation can be found at https://github.com/uchidalab/time_series_augmentation .
