Inside the Summit Where China Pitched Its AI Agenda to the World
Three days after the Trump administration published its much-anticipated AI action plan, the Chinese government put out its own AI policy blueprint. Was the timing a coincidence? China's "Global AI Governance Action Plan" was released on July 26, the first day of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), the largest annual AI event in China. Geoffrey Hinton and Eric Schmidt were among the many Western tech industry figures who attended the festivities in Shanghai. Our WIRED colleague Will Knight was also on the scene.
Mathematical Theory of Bayesian Statistics for Unknown Information Source
In statistical inference, uncertainty is unknown and all models are wrong. That is to say, a person who makes a statistical model and a prior distribution is simultaneously aware that both are fictional candidates. To study such cases, statistical measures have been constructed, such as cross validation, information criteria, and marginal likelihood, however, their mathematical properties have not yet been completely clarified when statistical models are under- and over- parametrized. We introduce a place of mathematical theory of Bayesian statistics for unknown uncertainty, which clarifies general properties of cross validation, information criteria, and marginal likelihood, even if an unknown data-generating process is unrealizable by a model or even if the posterior distribution cannot be approximated by any normal distribution. Hence it gives a helpful standpoint for a person who cannot believe in any specific model and prior. This paper consists of three parts. The first is a new result, whereas the second and third are well-known previous results with new experiments. We show there exists a more precise estimator of the generalization loss than leave-one-out cross validation, there exists a more accurate approximation of marginal likelihood than BIC, and the optimal hyperparameters for generalization loss and marginal likelihood are different.

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference, or WAIC, will open in Shanghai tomorrow. The World Artificial Intelligence Conference, or WAIC, China's top AI event, will open on Thursday, with leading business executives participating and new tech innovations and products making debut. As the first batch of restarted exhibitions and conferences in Shanghai following the lift of the city's COVID-19 lockdown in June, the three-day WAIC 2022 will see strict pandemic prevention measures in place. As a result, many events will be held online with metaverse innovations. Scientists and business executives, including Huawei's rotating chairman Ken Hu and Qualcomm president and CEO Cristiano Amon, will attend the opening session tomorrow morning.
Metro city to showcase metaverse ambitions at 5th WAIC
The 5th World Artificial Intelligence Conference will take place in Shanghai from Sept 1 to 3, and a metaverse-an artificially intelligent, computer-generated virtual reality-will be one of its key exhibitions as the city moves to build a world-class artificial intelligence development cluster, officials said on Friday. The event, themed "Intelligent Connectivity, Infinite Multiverse," has attracted more than 200 exhibitors to showcase their products in the 15,000-square-meter exhibition area. This will be the debut show for more than 30 percent of these enterprises, said Wu Jincheng, director of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatization during a news conference on Friday. "The WAIC aspires to fully master the development of AI and the metaverse, connect the latest viewpoints and achievements in AI worldwide, and showcase Shanghai's outlook on AI," said Wu, adding that the WAIC has entered the final stage of its preparatory work. The conference's focus on the metaverse echoes the city's ambition, announced in July this year, to promote a variety of futuristic innovations such as low-carbon technologies, the metaverse and smart devices.

iQIYI VP Xie Danming Attends 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference's AITalk: The Age of AI Makes Art More Creative
On August 28th, Xie Danming, Vice President of iQIYI, Inc. (IQ) ("iQIYI" or the "Company"), was invited to AITalk, a pre-conference event of the 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference ("WAIC") Shanghai West Bund Forum. WAIC is China's first high-level conference that focuses on artificial intelligence ("AI"). National artificial intelligence (AI) plans, including those drafted by China, should promote international collaboration, not just permit it, according to Tom Mitchell, former dean of Carnegie Mellon University's computer science school. Why it matters: Mitchell, known as the father of machine learning, was speaking at the opening ceremony of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai on Thursday. "What I think these national strategies need is a distinction that says for win-win applications the rational strategy for every country is not just to allow collaboration but actually to promote it. And to find ways to, for example, share medical data internationally, and share algorithms and the hard engineering work." Details: Mitchell said that AI applications in healthcare, education, and smart cities could benefit from researchers in different countries working together.

The 2019 World Artificial Intelligence (AI) Conference (WAIC) took place in Shanghai (China) on 27 August. The Conference was devoted to AI applications in relation to Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The Conference was sponsored by the Government of the Jinshan District, which hosts the "UAS Base", and organised by the Aircraft owner and Pilot Association (AOPA) of China. In was attended by about 200 international experts from several countries of the world. In addition to Chinese experts, presentations were delivered by speakers coming from Germany, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, USA and Italy.
