The best cheap VPN in 2026

Engadget

You'll get the best VPN experience by paying, but prices don't have to be steep. When talking about the best VPNs, I frequently warn about the dangers of trusting free VPNs without verifying them. Although there are a few free VPNs worth recommending, many other free providers are ineffective, malicious or looking to profit off their users (or sometimes all three). Even the best free VPNs work a lot better once you subscribe and access their full service. This can be frustrating if you want to enjoy the benefits of a VPN but don't have the budget for yet another subscription.

Windscribe review: Despite the annoyances, it has the right idea

Engadget

The first step is always to figure out how easy or hard the VPN is to use. Windscribe and other VPNs are important tools, but you'll never use them if the UI gets in the way. I tested Windscribe's desktop apps on Windows and Mac, its mobile apps on iOS and Android and its Chrome and Firefox browser extensions. To start with, let me say that installing Windscribe is a breeze no matter where you do it. The downloaders and installers handle their own business, only requiring you to grant a few permissions. The apps arrive on your system ready to use out of the box.

7 simple ways to protect your credit cards while traveling

FOX News

Travel expert Colleen Kelly shares the hottest travel destinations for this summer and provides tips for travelers planning a cruise. As you rush through busy terminals, juggling bags and boarding passes, your credit cards may be at risk, not just from pickpockets, but from digital thieves using high-tech tools like RFID (radio-frequency identification) skimmers. While today's chip-enabled cards are more secure than old magnetic stripes, it's still wise to take extra precautions, especially in crowded places like airports. Here's how to keep your cards protected while traveling. GET SECURITY ALERTS & EXPERT TECH TIPS – SIGN UP FOR KURT'S'THE CYBERGUY REPORT' NOW WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Dangers of oversharing with AI tools

FOX News

Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier has the latest on regulatory uncertainty amid artificial intelligence development on "Special Report." Have you ever stopped to think about how much your chatbot knows about you? Over the years, tools like ChatGPT have become incredibly adept at learning your preferences, habits and even some of your deepest secrets. But while this can make them seem more helpful and personalized, it also raises some serious privacy concerns. As much as you learn from these AI tools, they learn just as much about you.

Value Prediction Network

Junhyuk Oh, Satinder Singh, Honglak Lee

Neural Information Processing Systems

This paper proposes a novel deep reinforcement learning (RL) architecture, called Value Prediction Network (VPN), which integrates model-free and model-based RL methods into a single neural network. In contrast to typical model-based RL methods, VPN learns a dynamics model whose abstract states are trained to make option-conditional predictions of future values (discounted sum of rewards) rather than of future observations. Our experimental results show that VPN has several advantages over both model-free and model-based baselines in a stochastic environment where careful planning is required but building an accurate observation-prediction model is difficult. Furthermore, VPN outperforms Deep Q-Network (DQN) on several Atari games even with short-lookahead planning, demonstrating its potential as a new way of learning a good state representation.

Visual Prompting Upgrades Neural Network Sparsification: A Data-Model Perspective

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The rapid development of large-scale deep learning models questions the affordability of hardware platforms, which necessitates the pruning to reduce their computational and memory footprints. Sparse neural networks as the product, have demonstrated numerous favorable benefits like low complexity, undamaged generalization, etc. Most of the prominent pruning strategies are invented from a model-centric perspective, focusing on searching and preserving crucial weights by analyzing network topologies. However, the role of data and its interplay with model-centric pruning has remained relatively unexplored. In this research, we introduce a novel data-model co-design perspective: to promote superior weight sparsity by learning important model topology and adequate input data in a synergetic manner. Specifically, customized Visual Prompts are mounted to upgrade neural Network sparsification in our proposed VPNs framework. As a pioneering effort, this paper conducts systematic investigations about the impact of different visual prompts on model pruning and suggests an effective joint optimization approach. Furthermore, we find that subnetworks discovered by VPNs from pre-trained models enjoy better transferability across diverse downstream scenarios. These insights shed light on new promising possibilities of data-model co-designs for vision model sparsification. Code is available at https://github.com/UNITES-Lab/VPNs. Large-scale neural networks like vision and language models (Brown et al., 2020; Radford et al., 2019; Touvron et al., 2023; Chiang et al., 2023; Li et al., 2022; Bai et al., 2023) have attracted stupendous attention in nowadays deep learning community, which pose significantly increased demands to computing resources. While remarkable performance has been offered, they suffer from prohibitively high training and inference costs, and the deployment of these gigantic models entails substantial memory and computational overhead.
