NGA official: Artificial intelligence is changing everything, 'We need a different mentality' - SpaceNews.com
The U.S. military got is first big taste of artificial intelligence with Project Maven. An Air Force initiative, it began more than a year ago as an experiment using machine learning algorithms developed by Google to analyze full-motion video surveillance. The project has received high praise within military circles for giving operators in the field instant access to the type of intelligence that typically would have taken a long time for geospatial data analysts to produce. Project Maven has whetted the military's appetite for artificial intelligence tools. And this is creating pressure on the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to jump on the AI bandwagon and start delivering Maven-like products and services.
Trump just appointed himself the White House's top AI adviser
The White House last week proudly announced the formation of a committee to advise the president and Federal government on AI. Sure, the US is forming the committee, that part's real. Here's a link to the official document announcing the panel, including remarks from Trump's top "science adviser" (sarcastic finger quotes, his degree is in political science) Michael Kratsios. In order to improve the coordination of Federal efforts related to AI and ensure continued U.S. leadership in AI, today The White House chartered a Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence ("Select Committee") under the National Science and Technology Council. It looks pretty cut and dry right?

As the latest indication of this, the White House announced the creation of a Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence during an organized AI summit of industry and academic partners Thursday. "As artificial intelligence transforms everything from agriculture to manufacturing to transportation, the potential for AI remains breathtaking," Michael Kratsios, deputy CTO at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in his remarks at the event. "But we cannot be passive. To realize the full potential of AI for the American people, it will require the combined efforts of industry, academia, and government." The new committee, likewise, holds a mission "to improve the coordination of Federal efforts related to AI to ensure continued U.S. leadership in this field."
White House Announces Select Committee of Federal AI Experts
Artificial intelligence is perhaps the biggest buzzword in federal technology today. For the government--and society at large--to truly benefit from AI's potential, government, industry and academia will have to come together to foster this nascent technology, according to the president's top tech adviser. The White House convened a summit Thursday of top thinkers in the field of AI, during which Michael Kratsios, deputy assistant to the president for technology policy and current head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, announced a new Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence made of up the leading AI researchers in government. "In the summer of 1956, a dozen American scientists gathered on Dartmouth's campus with the goal to, 'find how to make machines solve the kinds of problems now reserved for humans,'" Kratsios said, according to prepared remarks provided to Nextgov by OSTP. "Now, nearly 62 years later, the age of artificial intelligence is here, and with it the hope of better lives for the American people."
Pentagon launching joint office focused on artificial intelligence - Fedscoop
The Defense Department has plans to open a joint office focused on developing artificial intelligence prototypes. Michael Griffin, the newly appointed and first undersecretary of Defense for research and engineering, said Friday during a discussion at the Hudson Institute that his office is creating a so-called "Joint Artificial Intelligence Office" and similar offices for other emerging technologies, like hypersonics. Griffin's remarks came on the tail of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' Senate testimony Thursday in which he described his aggressive agenda for Pentagon research and engineering. "We're going to move things into production, prototyping," Mattis said. "We're not going to have more papers, we're going to move on hypersonics, move on AI." He explained that means coordinated office across the department, "not a bunch of different organizations all feeling their way forward."
