How ChatGPT coached me to email greatness

PCWorld

When it comes to professional exchanges, I'll be the first one to admit that I'm a bit awkward. Sometimes my tone is more terse than intended (sorry!) or I'm just not as clear as I'd like to be from the get-go. Weirdly enough, sometimes I'm more comfortable writing from the perspective of a fictional character than from my own, though it depends on the type of writing. Since I work from home and communicate with my coworkers via text the majority of the time, I decided to elicit help from the all-knowing chatbot otherwise known as ChatGPT. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised by the offered guidance and often found myself using the chatbot as a soundboard for my email drafts.

Apple Intelligence is headed to the Vision Pro in April, dev beta available today

Engadget

The rumors are true: Apple confirmed today that the Vision Pro will get Apple Intelligence features in April with the arrival of visionOS 2.4. A developer beta is also rolling out today for the less patient. As we've seen on other devices, Apple is starting out the Vision Pro's AI rollout with basic features. Those include Writing Tools, which can help you summarize, rewrite and proofread text, as well as generate text with ChatGPT; Image Playground for creating AI imagery; and Genmoji for building custom AI generated emojis and stickers. It really was only a matter of when Apple would bring Apple Intelligence to the Vision Pro.

Assassin's Creed Shadows preview: a few steps in the right direction

Engadget

The publisher had a rough 2024, with Star Wars Outlaws failing to meet sales expectations and word of XDefiant's demise coming around six months after the tactical shooter debuted. Skull and Bones finally arrived too, but it was a bit of a damp squib. Amid rumors of the company being sold or spinning out some of its assets into a joint venture with Tencent, Ubisoft really needs a win. It's not going to have a better chance to do that anytime soon than with Assassin's Creed Shadows. After a couple of delays, the latest entry in the company's flagship series is set to arrive on March 20.

Nvidia App tweaks: 5 changes every GeForce gamer should make ASAP

PCWorld

Console gamers have a leg up on PC gamers when it comes to ease of use. Turn it on and your settings are mostly chosen for you with little fuss. From game to game, the overall experience is standardized -- no need to worry if your PlayStation 5 can handle the latest releases. As PC gamers, we may have more options, but that comes at a cost. There's a real learning curve when it comes to configuring hardware and software to run games optimally, and developers have to play it safer as they're forced to support a much wider range of specs.

Polyend Tracker Review: Powerful but Niche

WIRED

Polyend's Tracker is a significant update to its powerful (if somewhat anachronistic) sample-based groovebox, the Tracker. What made the Tracker so unique, and also confounding, was that it was a tracker (small t), but in hardware form. Trackers were an early form of music-making software that emerged in the late '80s. They were initially used mainly for video game music but eventually found favor with a certain strain of electronic musicians, most famously Aphex Twin. They're very much a product of their time though, designed to work around the limitations of late 20th century personal computers like the Amiga.

Google's AI Is Making Traffic Lights More Efficient and Less Annoying

WIRED

Each time a driver in Seattle meets a red light, they wait about 20 seconds on average before it turns green again, according to vehicle and smartphone data collected by analytics company Inrix. The delays cause annoyance and expel in Seattle alone an estimated 1,000 metric tons or more of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each day. With a little help from new Google AI software, the toll on both the environment and drivers is beginning to drop significantly. Seattle is among a dozen cities across four continents, including Jakarta, Rio de Janeiro, and Hamburg, optimizing some traffic signals based on insights from driving data from Google Maps, aiming to reduce emissions from idling vehicles. The project analyzes data from Maps users using AI algorithms and has initially led to timing tweaks at 70 intersections.

Pinterest's search overhaul makes it easier to find plus-size fashion

Engadget

Pinterest is again changing its search algorithm to make its results more representative of the people using its platform. The latest update is aimed at improving the visibility of plus-size fashion and other styles that highlight a broader spectrum of body shapes and sizes. With the changes, searches for women's fashion and wedding looks will surface results with a more diverse range of body types, Pinterest says. Annie Ta, Pinterests's head of inclusive products, said the changes were driven by the realization that many users were adding "descriptions and qualifiers," to their queries in an effort to find the styles that best fit their needs. "They were experiencing something really similar: recommendations that were homogenous and not very diverse," she said.
