Triple Generative Adversarial Nets
Generative Adversarial Nets (GANs) have shown promise in image generation and semi-supervised learning (SSL). However, existing GANs in SSL have two problems: (1) the generator and the discriminator (i.e. the classifier) may not be optimal at the same time; and (2) the generator cannot control the semantics of the generated samples. The problems essentially arise from the two-player formulation, where a single discriminator shares incompatible roles of identifying fake samples and predicting labels and it only estimates the data without considering the labels. To address the problems, we present triple generative adversarial net (Triple-GAN), which consists of three players---a generator, a discriminator and a classifier. The generator and the classifier characterize the conditional distributions between images and labels, and the discriminator solely focuses on identifying fake image-label pairs. We design compatible utilities to ensure that the distributions characterized by the classifier and the generator both converge to the data distribution. Our results on various datasets demonstrate that Triple-GAN as a unified model can simultaneously (1) achieve the state-of-the-art classification results among deep generative models, and (2) disentangle the classes and styles of the input and transfer smoothly in the data space via interpolation in the latent space class-conditionally.

Semi-supervised Learning using Adversarial Training with Good and Bad Samples

In this work, we investigate semi-supervised learning (SSL) for image classification using adversarial training. Previous results have illustrated that generative adversarial networks (GANs) can be used for multiple purposes. Triple-GAN, which aims to jointly optimize model components by incorporating three players, generates suitable image-label pairs to compensate for the lack of labeled data in SSL with improved benchmark performance. Conversely, Bad (or complementary) GAN, optimizes generation to produce complementary data-label pairs and force a classifier's decision boundary to lie between data manifolds. Although it generally outperforms Triple-GAN, Bad GAN is highly sensitive to the amount of labeled data used for training. Unifying these two approaches, we present unified-GAN (UGAN), a novel framework that enables a classifier to simultaneously learn from both good and bad samples through adversarial training. We perform extensive experiments on various datasets and demonstrate that UGAN: 1) achieves state-of-the-art performance among other deep generative models, and 2) is robust to variations in the amount of labeled data used for training.

Generative Adversarial Classifier for Handwriting Characters Super-Resolution
Qian, Zhuang, Huang, Kaizhu, Wang, Qiufeng, Xiao, Jimin, Zhang, Rui
Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) receive great attentions recently due to its excellent performance in image generation, transformation, and super-resolution. However, GAN has rarely been studied and trained for classification, leading that the generated images may not be appropriate for classification. In this paper, we propose a novel Generative Adversarial Classifier (GAC) particularly for low-resolution Handwriting Character Recognition. Specifically, involving additionally a classifier in the training process of normal GANs, GAC is calibrated for learning suitable structures and restored characters images that benefits the classification. Experimental results show that our proposed method can achieve remarkable performance in handwriting characters 8x super-resolution, approximately 10% and 20% higher than the present state-of-the-art methods respectively on benchmark data CASIA-HWDB1.1 and MNIST.
