Drone strikes in Ethiopia's Tigray kill one amid fears of renewed conflict
Drone strikes in Ethiopia's Tigray kill one amid fears of renewed conflict One person has been killed and another injured in drone strikes in Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, a senior Tigrayan official and a humanitarian worker said, in another sign of renewed conflict between regional and federal forces. The Tigrayan official on Saturday said the drone strikes hit two Isuzu trucks near Enticho and Gendebta, two places in Tigray about 20km (12 miles) apart. A local humanitarian worker confirmed the strikes had happened. Both asked not to be named, the Reuters news agency reported. It was not immediately clear what the trucks were carrying.

Addis summit raises questions about AU's muted stance on Ethiopia rifts
From Thursday, African leaders will gather in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, home of the African Union (AU), for the continental body's annual summit. According to AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, regional integration and "maintaining momentum in addressing issues of peace and security" is high on the agenda. But in an ironic twist, the host of the summit has either initiated or been involved in multiple conflicts in the last three years. Ethiopia's two-year civil war with the state of Tigray may have ended in November 2022 after a Pretoria pact, but federal troops are currently upping drone strikes against rebels known as Fano militia in the state of Amhara, next door to Tigray. This week, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council said "at least 45 civilians" had been killed by federal troops in Amhara.

UN says aid truck hit by debris from Ethiopian drone strike
Debris from a drone strike in northern Ethiopia's Tigray region has damaged a truck carrying humanitarian aid and belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP) and injured the truck's driver, the United Nations agency said on Monday. The WFP said the drone strike on Sunday hit near an area called Zana Woreda in northwestern Tigray, as two trucks were delivering relief supplies to families displaced by the nearly two-year long conflict. "Flying debris from the strike injured a driver contracted by WFP and caused minor damage to a WFP fleet truck," the spokesperson said, adding it was not possible to say yet whether further distributions would be suspended in the area. "WFP calls on all parties to respect and adhere to international humanitarian laws and to commit to safeguarding humanitarian workers, premises and assets." The WFP truck was delivering food to internally displaced people as hundreds of thousands have been uprooted by renewed fighting since August 24 after a five-month ceasefire broke down.

'More than a dozen killed' by Ethiopian drone attack in Tigray
An air attack in Ethiopia's northern region of Tigray on Monday killed at least 17 people, mostly women, and wounded dozens in the town of Mai Tsebri, two aid workers have told Reuters news agency, citing local authorities and witnesses. Monday's attack came on the day US President Joe Biden in a phone call raised concerns with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed about civilian casualties and suffering caused by air attacks. At least 56 people were killed and 30 injured, including some children, in a drone attack on a camp for displaced people in Tigray on Friday. A report by the zonal administration said women at a flour mill made up most of the casualties in Monday's drone attack, a source who saw the report told The Associated Press news agency. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak about it to reporters.
