FCC chair asks telecoms companies to prove they're actually trying to stop political AI robocalls
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has drafted a series of letters to nine major telecom companies, including AT&T and Comcast, to ask if they're actually doing anything about AI political robocalls. AI-generated voices are getting pretty good at mimicking humans and we've already seen this technology in action, when an audio deepfake urged voters to skip the New Hampshire Democratic primary. "We know that AI technologies will make it cheap and easy to flood our networks with deepfakes used to mislead and betray trust. It is especially chilling to see AI voice cloning used to impersonate candidates during elections. As AI tools become more accessible to bad actors and scammers, we need to do everything we can to keep this junk off our networks," wrote Rosenworcel. It's worth noting that all AI robocalls were banned back in February, political or not, but the big telecom companies have yet to announce any enforcement plans.

To address the limitations of traffic prediction from location-bound detectors, we present Geographical Cellular Traffic (GCT) flow, a novel data source that leverages the extensive coverage of cellular traffic to capture mobility patterns. Our extensive analysis validates its potential for transportation. Focusing on vehicle-related GCT flow prediction, we propose a graph neural network that integrates multivariate, temporal, and spatial facets for improved accuracy. Experiments reveal our model's superiority over baselines, especially in long-term predictions. We also highlight the potential for GCT flow integration into transportation systems.

SEONGNAM, SOUTH KOREA--At the new headquarters of South Korea's largest internet company, a fleet of self-driving robots whirl around delivering coffee, lunchboxes and mailed packages. More than 100 of these autonomous robots, which look a bit like the droid R2-D2 from the "Star Wars" films and go by the name "Rookie," are operational at Naver high-rise office building. The tower is specifically designed with bump-free flooring and handle-free doors that open via sensors to help the robots move around more easily. Powering the robots is a critical technology: a private 5G network that gives them a stable connection to the cloud, or virtual server, where their computing takes place, and where each unit's learned intelligence is stored and shared. Having the hardware for this in the cloud keeps the robots small and less expensive to build, key requirements for broader adoption.
