Idaho once dropped 76 beavers from airplanes--on purpose
In the early 1900s, beavers had almost completely disappeared from the United States due to hunting and trapping. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Beavers might rival even the most hardworking corporate employee in productivity and hustle, but they're not quite cut out for business travel--especially the airborne kind. Nevertheless, in 1948, 76 industrious beavers were subjected to a once-in-a-lifetime "work trip" to Idaho's remote Chamberlain Basin--via parachute. The event, which was captured in a now-viral video, has become celebrated as a quirky example of human ingenuity and environmental stewardship. After all, who can resist a flying beaver?

California is racing to combat deepfakes ahead of the election
Days after Vice President Kamala Harris launched her presidential bid, a video -- created with the help of artificial intelligence -- went viral. "I ... am your Democrat candidate for president because Joe Biden finally exposed his senility at the debate," a voice that sounded like Harris' said in the fake audio track used to alter one of her campaign ads. "I was selected because I am the ultimate diversity hire." Billionaire Elon Musk -- who has endorsed Harris' Republican opponent, former President Trump-- shared the video on X, then clarified two days later that it was actually meant as a parody. His initial tweet had 136 million views.

Narcan, rare books and citizenship: How L.A.'s chief librarian is meeting the city's needs
The sparrows fled the courtyard. It was quiet amid the classics. John Szabo stepped out of the elevator and walked through the sunlit atrium of the Central Library. He passed a slumbering homeless man and, with the efficiency of a spy, disappeared into stacks of bound archives, hundreds of thousands of relevant and obscure pages -- including the 1991 "Journal of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan." A tall man with sparks of gray in his goatee, Szabo, the city librarian, oversees 72 branches, a $241.8 million budget, 17,000 restaurant menus, 64 ukuleles, a Shakespeare volume from 1685, and lockers of puppets for a children's theater. He stopped at a shelf holding years of "Family Handyman" magazines. Founded in 1951 for those who grout tile and hang cabinets, the periodical was no match for Prince Harry's memoir or a Stephen King novel.

NeuralCam App Adds 48MP AI Super Resolution Upscaler to iPhone
NeuralCam has launched version 5 of its iPhone app that adds a super-resolution 48-megapixel artificial intelligence (AI) upscaling system that it claims reduces noise and enhances detail in photos. NeuralCam first launched in 2019 with a powerful AI-based low-light mode for iPhone photography. The company says that as time has passed, it discovered that many of its users were using the app for more than low light. With this in mind, the team set out to create a feature that would be useful in all lighting environments. The resulting technology brings 48-megapixel AI super-resolution to the iPhone in a system that is similar to what is found in desktop applications like Topaz and Lightroom but runs locally in only a few seconds.
Local Doctor Completes 805th Robotic Surgery
Dr. Stephen Szabo, an OB/GYN with Pinehurst Surgical Clinic (PSC), reached a milestone on Thursday, Sept. 19 with his 805th robotic surgery -- a hysterectomy with sacrocolpopexy and bladder suspension. Dr. Szabo first performed a robotically-assisted surgery in 2006 after coming to Pinehurst Surgical in 1998. He and Pinehurst Surgical Urologists Dr. Robert Chamberlain and Dr. Greg Griewe, along with Dr. Walter Fasolak, from FirstHealth's Southern Pines Women's Center, formed the core group of physicians who spearheaded the introduction of robotic surgery in Moore County. With 805 surgeries complete, Dr. Szabo is now in the company of an elite and distinguished group of surgeons practicing the art of robotic-assisted healthcare. The minimally invasive approach means that advanced gynecologic surgeries, which would have resulted in a three-to-five-day hospital stay, now only require a stay of three to five hours -- and carry a reduced risk of complications or infection.
