The AI edge chip market is on fire, kindled by 'staggering' VC funding
Chips to perform AI inference on edge devices such as smartphones is a red-hot market, even years into the field's emergence, attracting more and more startups and more and more venture funding, according to a prominent chip analyst firm covering the field. "There are more new startups continuing to come out, and continuing to try to differentiate," says Mike Demler, Senior Analyst with The Linley Group, which publishes the widely read Microprocessor Report, in an interview with ZDNet via phone. Linley Group produces two conferences each year in Silicon Valley hosting numerous startups, the Spring and Fall Processor Forum, with an emphasis in recent years on those AI startups. At the most recent event, held in October, both virtually and in-person, in Santa Clara, California, the conference was packed with startups such Flex Logix, Hailo Technologies, Roviero, BrainChip, Syntiant, Untether AI, Expedera, and Deep AI giving short talks about their chip designs. Demler and team regularly assemble a research report titled the Guide to Processors for Deep Learning, the latest version of which is expected out this month.

Tiny Machine Learning Development Board Now Available for Building Low-Power Voice, Audio and Sensor Applications using Edge Impulse's Embedded ML Platform IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 29, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Syntiant Corp, a provider of deep learning solutions making edge AI a reality for always-on applications in battery-powered devices, today unveiled its TinyML Development Board, an easy-to-use developer kit aimed at both technical and non-technical users for building machine learning-powered applications in smart products, such as speech commands, wake word detection, acoustic event detection and other sensor use cases. Equipped with the ultra-low-power Syntiant NDP101 Neural Decision Processor, the TinyML board can enable speech and sensor applications to run at under 140 and 100 microwatts, respectively, delivering 20x more throughput and 200x efficiency improvement compared to traditional MCU-based systems. Sized at 24 mm x 28 mm, the Syntiant TinyML board is a small, self-contained system that allows trained models to be easily downloaded via Edge Impulse through a micro-USB connection without the need for any specialized hardware. The new board also is fully compatible with Arduino's open-source platform. Voice-focused deep learning tech firm Syntiant has notched $35 million in a Series C funding round. The three-year-old startup based in Irvine, Calif., said Tuesday (Aug. The round was led by Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) venture arm M12 and Applied Ventures, the investment fund of Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT). New investors included Atlantic Bridge Capital, Alpha Edison and Miramar Digital Ventures. Intel Capital was an early backer of Syntiant, part of a package of investments the chip maker announced in 2018 targeting AI processors that promise to accelerate the transition of machine learning from the cloud to edge devices.

CEO Kurt Busch says the funds will be used to ramp up production throughout the remainder of 2020. According to a report published by Meticulous Research, the speech and voice recognition hardware market is expected to reach $26.8 billion by 2025. That's because devices like smart speakers, smart displays, phones, headphones, hearing aids, and laptops require low-power chips to process utterances. While some system-on-chip offerings sport coprocessors to handle voice recognition, they're often not able to accommodate multiple form factors. Three-year-old Syntiant, which is headquartered in Irvine, California, provides hardware that merges machine learning with semiconductor design for always-on voice applications.

Ultra-low-power AI accelerator startup Syntiant has raised another $35 million in a series C round of funding to bring the total raised by the company to $65 million. Syntiant, whose 66 staff work out of Irvine, Calif., also announced that it has hit a shipping milestone with 1 million parts in the hands of customers. Third round Syntiant's C round was led by Microsoft's VC fund, M12, and Applied Ventures, the VC arm of Applied Materials. "[$35m] gets us pretty far into growing our sales team and ramping our revenue," Syntiant CEO Kurt Busch told EE Times. "We have the second-generation chip already back in the lab, which we expect to announce before the end of the year… this funding will also be used to fund development of third generation silicon and build out our customer base."
