Two Britons among three killed in Swiss Alps light aircraft crash
Two Britons are among three people killed in a plane crash in the Swiss Alps. The light aircraft crashed high in the mountains near the town of Leukerbad in the southern canton of Valais on Tuesday. The authorities said the Cirrus SR22T took off from Sion airport in the Rhône Valley and, for unknown reasons, collided with a mountain slope about 10 minutes later. Witnesses reported seeing a fire and smoke. Emergency teams from the Valais Rescue Organisation, police and firefighters were sent to the scene along with three helicopters. The Swiss Transportation Safety Board has started an investigation.
Faisal Islam: Global disruption looms large over biggest-ever Davos
Apart from the snow and the temperature Greenland does not have much in common with the Swiss alps. But the fight for the future of the island looms over the gathering of world leaders and businesses at the World Economic Forum (WEF) this week. Indeed the timing of Donald Trump's extraordinary threat must have had in mind this meeting. And that is beyond strange given the views of his base. Last year, he beamed himself into the WEF from the White House, appearing before an audience of largely bewildered European executives just two days after his inauguration.
A behaviour monitoring dataset of wild mammals in the Swiss Alps
Have you ever wondered how wild animals behave when no one's watching? Understanding these behaviors is vital for protecting ecosystems--especially as climate change and human expansion alter natural habitats. But collecting this kind of information without interfering has always been tricky. Traditionally, researchers relied on direct observation or sensors strapped to animals--methods that are either disruptive or limited in scope. Camera traps offer a less invasive alternative, but they generate vast amounts of footage that's hard to analyze.
