Swiping in Japan: how Gen Z is changing the dating app game

The Japan Times

One day in October, 26-year-old Seokjin decided to download Tapple, a popular dating app in Japan. The business consultant, who asked to go by his first name for privacy reasons, said that he wanted someone he could lean on after starting his first job in April and feeling overworked. "Around August and September I was constantly thinking, why do I have to work so much?" he says. "I wanted my life to have more of a purpose and have someone that I could spend it with and go on trips with, someone who would be on my team when things were rough -- that's why I started using the app."

America Is Sick of Swiping

The Atlantic - Technology

Modern dating can be severed into two eras: before the swipe, and after. When Tinder and other dating apps took off in the early 2010s, they unleashed a way to more easily access potential love interests than ever before. By 2017, about five years after Tinder introduced the swipe, more than a quarter of different-sex couples were meeting on apps and dating websites, according to a study led by the Stanford sociologist Michael Rosenfeld. Suddenly, saying "We met on Hinge" was as normal as saying "We met in college" or "We met through a friend." The share of couples meeting on apps has remained pretty consistent in the years since his 2017 study, Rosenfeld told me.

Swiping through Tinder makes you unhappy about your body

Daily Mail - Science & tech

They might look confident in their photos but people on the dating app Tinder are probably lacking morale. Swiping through the popular dating app lowers your self-esteem and makes you unhappy about your body, new research found. People accept or reject potential matches based on photos which takes a toll on people's sense of worth, the study found. People with lower self-esteem could be more likely to use these types of apps which then draws them in to a downward spiral of self-doubt, researchers suggest. The research, led by the University of Rhode Island, looked at 820 college-age Tinder users - 700 female and 120 male students.

Tinder is not a 'game' anymore, after 'Keep Playing' button disappears from the app

The Independent - Tech

Due to a very subtle wording change, the popular dating app has become a much more serious affair. In the past, when users got a match, they were presented with two buttons - 'Send Message', which would let them chat with their new beau, or'Keep Playing', which took them back to the swiping screen. From "Keep playing" to "Keep swiping" Tinder 5.0 just got dead serious guys! - for more - https://t.co/J5Fd4ZMYkY… The'Send Message' button is still there, but the one below now reads'Keep Swiping' - all mention of Tinder being some kind of game appears to have been removed. As Business Insider reports, this change is currently only being tested on certain iOS users, so most swipers will still see the old buttons.
