In early February, Underwater Intervention provided a series of presentations on developments in untethered vehicles. A powerful trend was the increasing level of "autonomy" found in the sector. While not all the presentations addressed this theme, several helped clarify the many ways this "buzzword" is advancing the capabilities of untethered marine vehicles. A team of researchers have mapped the mysterious Dragon's Breath Cave in Namibia, one of the world's largest underground lakes located below the Kalahari Desert. The lake's size and depth had been a problem for human divers who attempted to document it in the past. These weren't problems for the AI-powered underwater drone, nicknamed SUNFISH, which the team from Stone Aerospace, a company in Austin, Texas, used to create the first fully realized 3D map of the mysterious cave. A team of engineers from Austin traveled to Namibia to try and map one of the world's largest underground lakes, the Dragon's Breath Cave, with an AI-powered drone SUNFISH looks like a small enclosed canoe and is powered by a set of small propellers. It uses a sonar mapping system to create a 3D image of its surroundings, which an onboard AI system then uses to make decisions about where to go next.

For more than a year, Matsuzaki and a team of engineers had been developing their little robot--a bread-loaf-sized, red and white machine equipped with five propellers, a transparent dome, front and rear video cameras, and an array of lights and sensors. Nicknamed Little Sunfish, it was engineered to operate underwater, in total darkness, amid intense radiation. And after three months of testing, training, and fine-tuning, it was deemed ready to fulfill its mission: to find and photograph the melted-down radioactive fuel that had gone missing inside the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. More than six years had passed since an earthquake and tsunami hammered northeastern Japan and reduced the Fukushima facility to radioactive ruin.

A robot sent to explore the submerged ruins of Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant is offering a new look at the damage from one of history's worst nuclear disasters. The device nicknamed "Little Sunfish" found melted clumps of material that could be the fuel debris it was sent to locate, according to updates Friday. After an earthquake struck near Japan on March 11, 2011, a tsunami spurred by the quake hit the nuclear plant, damaging generators and causing three nuclear meltdowns and the subsequent release of radioactive material. No radiation-related deaths have been reported, but nearly 100,000 homes had to be evacuated in the aftermath of the disaster. Six years later, the homes remain deserted.
