Peak is this summer's finest co-op game. The game, created in partnership with developers Aggro Crab and Landfall as part of a game jam, is currently in Steam's top five bestsellers. It sold over a million copies in its first week, and has now surpassed 8 million, according to Aggro Crab cofounder Nick Kamen. Now, as a result of its success, says Kamen, scammers are selling cheap, AI-made versions of it wherever they can. "We hate to see it," says Kamen.
Westminster's reliance on Elon Musk's X is 'totally wrong', says Labour MP
Westminster needs to wean itself off X, a close ally of Keir Starmer has said, as he suggested that Elon Musk was deliberately manipulating its algorithm to boost his own political and personal interests. Josh Simons, the MP for Makerfield and former head of the Starmerite thinktank Labour Together, said he believed the British political class was dangerously addicted to the platform, formerly known as Twitter. Simons maintains an active X profile, but says he is keen not to "overuse" it. His comments reflect a growing concern among Labour MPs about the impact of X after the summer's riots, during which misinformation spread rapidly on the platform. But they also threaten to exacerbate tensions between the government and the company, with Musk continuing to attack Starmer over ministers' response to the violence.
Black Myth: Wukong โ the summer's most exciting, and most controversial, video game
When Chinese developer Game Science revealed its debut console game Black Myth: Wukong last year, it immediately caused a stir. Inspired by the great 16th-century Chinese novel, Journey to the West, the action-packed footage featured the titular mythological monkey Sun Wukong battling Buddhist-folklore demons and sword-wielding anthropomorphic foxes in lusciously rendered forests. Smartphone games are inordinately popular in China, but console game developers are still few and far between, and the excitement for Wukong in Game Science's homeland reached fever pitch. Within 24 hours, the trailer racked up 2m views on YouTube and more than 10m on Chinese video sharing site Bilibili, much to its creators' shock and delight. One excited fan even broke into the developer's office, desperate for more info on the game.

A novice police officer assigned to watch over a refugee group tries to figure out whether the refugees have been framed for terrorism--and where the real killers are lurking. Technically, this is an accurate description of the plot of David Musgrave's debut novel, Lambda. Sounds like a pretty straightforward potboiler, right? But from its first page, Lambda is up to something weirder and more unwieldy, ditching a linear narrative and setting the story in an alternate-universe Britain where you can get in trouble with the cops for damaging a talking toothbrush. In Lambda's bizarro-world 2019, advances have been made in artificial intelligence to the point that "sentient objects" have been granted rights, including said toothbrush, aka the ToothFriendIV.
Reflections on 1956
The Dartmouth College Artificial Intelligence Conference: The Next 50 Years (AI@50) took place July 13-15, 2006. The conference had three objectives: to celebrate the Dartmouth Summer Research Project, which occurred in 1956; to assess how far AI has progressed; and to project where AI is going or should be going. AI@50 was generously funded by the office of the Dean of Faculty and the office of the Provost at Dartmouth College, by DARPA, and by some private donors. Dating the beginning of any movement is difficult, but the Dartmouth Summer Research Project of 1956 is often taken as the event that initiated AI as a research discipline. John Mc-Carthy, a mathematics professor at Dartmouth at the time, had been disappointed that the papers in Automata Studies, which he coedited with Claude Shannon, did not say more about the possibilities of computers possessing intelligence.
Editorial Introduction to the Special Articles in the Summer Issue
This issue features expanded versions of articles selected from the 2015 AAAI Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence held in Austin, Texas. We present a selection of three articles describing deployed applications plus two more articles that discuss work on emerging applications. Since then, we have seen examples of AI applied to domains as varied as medicine, education, manufacturing, transportation, user modeling, military operations, and citizen science. The 2015 conference continued the tradition with a selection of 6 deployed applications describing systems in use by their intended end users, 13 emerging applications describing works in progress, and three papers in a new category for challenge problems. In the first article, Activity Planning for a Lunar Orbital Mission, John Bresina describes a deployed application of current planning technology in the context of a NASA mission called LADEE (Lunar Atmospheric and Dust Environment Explorer).
Editorial Introduction to the Summer and Fall Issues
This editorial introduction provides an overview of artificial intelligence for computational sustainability, and introduces the special issue articles that appear in this issue and the previous issue of AI Magazine. The emerging interdisciplinary field of computational sustainability (Gomes 2009) draws techniques from computer science, information science, mathematics, statistics, operations research, and related disciplines to help balance environmental and socioeconomic needs for sustainable development. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques play a key role in computational sustainability research, enabling the solution of sustainability problems that involve modeling or decision making in dynamic and uncertain environments. Since 2011, the main AAAI conference has included a special track on computational sustainability, encouraging AI research in this area and broader participation of sustainability researchers in the AAAI community. Sustainable solutions must balance between environmental, societal, and economic demands (United Nations General Assembly 2005).

Computer camp, as it was known to an earlier generation, just isn't what it used to be. With the booming growth of video games, the Internet and digital media, technology-minded kids have an enormous variety of things to learn at technology camps, which are often taught on the campuses of major universities.... Camp administrators say enrollment is up from last year.... And while the kids are on the computers for five to six hours a day, the instructors also take them outside for activities to break up the day."
