Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit, rather than a for-profit company, it promised to develop AI "in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity." With billions of dollars in investments from Microsoft, Japanese bank SoftBank, and chipmaker Nvidia, however, OpenAI has proposed changing its corporate structure to give investors more control over its technology. Critics of the change include cofounder-turned-competitor, Elon Musk, and nonprofits concerned about OpenAI's adherence to its mission.

Ubisoft is continuing its efforts to course-correct after several challenging years. Today, the video game company announced that it will launch a subsidiary centered around three of its most familiar franchises: Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. The as-yet-unnamed subsidiary will fold in the teams working on those three series, including Ubisoft studios in Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona and Sofia. This new business will receive an investment of 1.16 billion (roughly 1.25 billion) from its longstanding partner Tencent, granting the conglomerate a minority ownership stake. Following the transaction, Ubisoft will narrow focus to its other franchises, such as The Division and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon.

Alphabet, parent of Google and YouTube, saw a third straight quarter of better-than-anticipated gains as it reported earnings on Tuesday. The tech giant had largely exceeded analyst expectations for the previous two quarters, and Tuesday's results showed growth in both digital advertising and demand for Google Cloud. Shares rose in after-hours training. "The momentum across the company is extraordinary. Our commitment to innovation, as well as our long-term focus and investment in AI, are paying off with consumers and partners benefiting from our AI tools," said the CEO, Sundar Pichai. Analysts expected 12% year-on-year revenue growth, to 86.23bn, and earnings per share of 1.85.

On TikTok, Reddit, and elsewhere, posts are popping up from users claiming they're making 20 per hour--or more--completing small tasks in their spare time on sites such as DataAnnotation.tech, As companies have rushed to build AI models, the demand for "data annotation" and "data labeling" work has increased. Workers complete tasks such as writing and coding, which tech companies then use to develop artificial intelligence systems, which are trained using large numbers of example data points. Some models require all of their input data to be labeled by humans, a technique referred to as "supervised learning." And while "unsupervised learning," in which AI models are fed unlabeled data, is becoming increasingly popular, AI systems trained using unsupervised learning still often require a final step involving data labeled by humans.

OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk has sued the company, his fellow co-founders, associated businesses and unidentified others. He claims that, by chasing profits, they're violating OpenAI's status as a non-profit and its foundational contractual agreements to develop AI "for the benefit of humanity." The suit alleges that OpenAI has become a "closed-source de facto subsidiary" of Microsoft, which has invested 13 billion and holds a 49 percent stake. Microsoft uses OpenAI tech to power generative AI tools such as Copilot. According to the filing, under OpenAI's current board, it is allegedly developing and refining an artificial general intelligence (AGI) "to maximize profits for Microsoft, rather than for the benefit of humanity. This was a stark betrayal of the Founding Agreement."

Cruise, General Motors' self-driving development subsidiary, will lay off almost a quarter of its workforce--about 900 employees--the company announced Thursday. The cuts are part of a broader restructuring to focus the robotaxi unit on a narrower path to commercialization. Instead of expanding its commercial robotaxi service to multiple US cities, the company will relaunch its currently paused service in just one. Cruise wants to "enhance our safety standards and processes before we scale," company co-president and CTO Mo ElShenawy wrote in a letter to employees announcing the layoffs today. A company blog post said that 24 percent of full-time Cruise employees will be let go, with a focus on field and commercial operations, and corporate staffing, though some engineers are also affected.

The Game Awards got it wrong this year. One of the titles nominated for Best Independent Game, Dave the Diver, was produced by Nexon, one of the largest video game studios in South Korea. No matter how hard you squint, it is not indie. Dave the Diver is an excellent pixel-art game about deep-sea fishing and restaurant management, but it was commissioned and bankrolled by Nexon subsidiary Mintrocket, with billions of dollars and decades of experience at its back. When The Game Awards nominees were announced on November 13, fans were quick to point out the error, and the recurring debate over what "indie" means was reignited.

Hundreds of staff at leading artificial intelligence company OpenAI have threatened to quit and join Microsoft after the sudden firing of the company's co-founder Sam Altman. The OpenAI staff said they would follow Altman, who said he would be starting an artificial intelligence (AI) subsidiary at Microsoft after his surprise removal from the company that created the ChatGPT chatbot, which led to the rapid rise in AI tech. In a letter, some of OpenAI's most senior staff members threatened to leave the company if the board was not replaced. "The process through which you terminated Sam Altman and removed [co-founder and former president] Greg Brockman from the board has jeopardized all of this work and undermined our mission and company," the letter, first released to the technology news outlet Wired, reads. "Your conduct has made it clear you did not have the competence to oversee OpenAI". "Microsoft has assured us that there are positions for all OpenAI employees at this new subsidiary should we choose to join."

The OpenAI chaos took another twist on Monday morning as most of the company's staff threatened to quit unless the board resigns and reinstates former CEO Sam Altman and ex-president Greg Brockman. According to Wired and Kara Swisher, around 500 employees -- including several executives -- signed the letter. Swisher noted that OpenAI has 700 employees. Several of them, including Chief Technical Officer Mira Murati (who held the company's top job on an interim basis for less than a weekend), wrote on X early Monday that "OpenAI is nothing without its people."
