Oakland Athletics pitcher Jesus Luzardo was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday after it was revealed he suffered a freak injury while playing video games. The left-handed starter suffered a hairline fracture on his left pinky finger after he bumped his hand on his desk while playing a video game, Athletics manager Bob Melvin told reporters. "Before the game he was playing a video game and accidentally bumped his hand on the desk as he was playing the game," Melvin said.

I am a baseball fan. This will come as no surprise to anyone who has followed me for any length of time. This year, I was recruited to be a part of a fantasy league. For those who know about such things, it's a 5x5 league (Batting SB, R, RBI, Avg, HR and Pitching W, Saves, WHIP, ERA, Strikeouts). I was honored to be invited because this particular league has been around since before baseball statistics became so ubiquitous.

The research comes from the Duke University Medical Center. With the study, computer scientists discovered that baseball players with higher scores on computer-based vision and motor tasks went on to have better on-base percentages. In addition, these players had more walks and fewer strikeouts ('plate discipline') compared with those who did not take part in similar tests. Artificial intelligence was used to make the predictions, drawing inferences from Bayesian hierarchical latent variable models. The inference is that the baseball scouts of tomorrow who are on the look out for a consistent, conscientious hitter may find as many clues by assessing data gathered from how the player completes task in front of a computer screen as they would from watching the player exhibit his or her sporting prowess on the field.

Execution Monitoring as Meta-Games for General Game-Playing Robots

General Game Playing aims to create AI systems that can understand the rules of new games and learn to play them effectively without human intervention. The recent proposal for general game-playing robots extends this to AI systems that play games in the real world. Execution monitoring becomes a necessity when moving from a virtual to a physical environment, because in reality actions may not be executed properly and (human) opponents may make illegal game moves. We develop a formal framework for execution monitoring by which an action theory that provides an axiomatic description of a game is automatically embedded in a meta-game for a robotic player — called the arbiter — whose role is to monitor and correct failed actions. This allows for the seamless encoding of recovery behaviours within a meta-game, enabling a robot to recover from these unexpected events.
