Robots reign supreme in new VR games for Oculus headsets
As Oculus hosts its annual OC5 event in San Francisco this week, the company isn't just looking back at its five years in existence, it's looking forward. Specifically to "the latest and greatest in gaming content," Steve Arnold, head of Oculus Studio Content, told assembled reporters at a preview event held the week prior. "One of the'aha' moments for VR for people is definitely multiplayer," Nate Mitchell, head of the Rift team, added. "Getting in VR with someone else, really feeling like you're truly there in a way that you can't do with traditional games is one of the little bits of magic that we've seen VR developers working on." I definitely felt a bit of that magic in a pair of these games on display: Vox Machinae by Space Bullet Dynamics Corporation and Stormland by Insomniac Games.
'Stormland' Looks So Great, I Kind Of Wish It Wasn't A VR Game
Insomniac Games, the storied developer behind Ratchet & Clank, Spyro the Dragon and Sunset Overdrive, unveiled their new VR game Stormland Wednesday. It's a collaboration between Oculus Studios and Insomniac, and will be an exclusive to the Oculus Rift (sorry PSVR and HTC Vive owners.) The game is a co-op sci-fi shooter where you play as a robot in a fantastical universe. You play as a robot that's been left for dead, and explore the world looking for upgrades, weapons and answers. You can play in solo or multiplayer.
'Spider-Man' developer teams up with Oculus for 'Stormland'
Whether you're a fan of Ratchet and Clank or more of a Resistance person, or you're just looking forward to this year's Spider-Man title, you've got to admit that Insomniac Games makes some pretty great stuff. Now Insomniac and Oculus Studios have released a trailer for a brand-new VR game, Stormland. There's no word on release dates or platforms as yet, but the trailer looks pretty stunning, showing a lush, open world that might remind you of Horizon Zero Dawn, with an adorably humanoid robot that seems to get its power from the natural world (echoes of Wall-E, there). You'll play as an android gardener on an alien planet. The Tempest (bad guys) have broken your body, so you need to explore the world to find things to augment and fix yourself.
