Boys, ages 7 and 9, seen in armed standoff receiving assistance from deputies
Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office released video of a February incident involving two young boys with a gun. A New Mexico sheriff's office is defending its decision not to arrest two young boys, ages 7 and 9, seen in drone footage in an armed standoff with deputies. Video released Thursday by the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) shows the two boys dressed in Minecraft and Star Wars-themed pajamas standing behind a covered air-conditioning unit and carrying a loaded handgun. In the nearly six minutes of footage shared, the children are seen looking around as if they are trying to avoid detection and capture. Eventually, the boys are surrounded and detained by deputies.
LAPD sends in robot dog to wrangle armed man on Metro bus -- only to find him sleeping
The Los Angeles Police Department deployed its controversial robot dog during a standoff with an armed man on a Metro bus Wednesday -- only to realize the person was asleep. Police responded to the busy intersection of Melrose and Western avenues in Hollywood just before 4 a.m. after receiving a report of a man with a gun on a bus, Officer Melissa Ohana said. The LAPD has since confirmed that the robot dog had been used before. A passenger had informed the bus driver about the armed man, and the driver contacted police. The driver pulled the bus to the side of the road and passengers safely got out, while the man stayed on board.
Watch an AI-powered tank shoot rounds and blow up targets in the first live fire of the 'Type-X'
Imagine a world where wars are fought by AI-powered tanks, allowing soldiers to stay at a safe distance from the battlefield and yet, still demolish their enemies. Although this sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, the scenario is exactly what Milrem Robotics and Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace have shown in a first live fire of the PROTECTOR Remote Turret from the Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV). The unmanned tank, dubbed Type-X,' features navigation and obstacle detection systems powered by AI and a range of weapons including 50 mm cannons, anti-tank missiles, and even a tethered drone. Milrem plans to sell its killer robotic tank to Nordic and Western European countries, but the US has also showed interest in the technology. And at least ten countries have already placed orders for the Type-X platform, including seven NATO members.

China deploys armed robotic vehicles during standoff with India to deal with cold, difficult terrain: reports
Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin discusses a report alleging China is developing'brain control weapons' on'Fox Report.' Reports from India claim that China has started to deploy armed robotic vehicles to handle the altitude and terrain that has proven too difficult for its troops. China and India clashed in Sept. 2020 during a border dispute along the southern coast of Pangong Lake in an area known in China as Shenpaoshan and in India as Chushul, but the armies continued their standoff along the two nations' borders throughout 2021. China has now reportedly deployed unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) to the region of Tibet to strengthen its position. People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers march next to the entrance to the Forbidden City during the opening ceremony of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing on May 21, 2020.

As Robots Fill the Workplace, They Must Learn to Get Along
So many robots work at Changi General Hospital in Singapore that until recently it wasn't uncommon to find two delivery bots sitting in a hallway or outside an elevator in a standoff. Such impasses used to happen "several times a day," says Selina Seah, who directs the hospital's Center for Healthcare Assistive and Robotics Technologies. Unsure how to move around another object, or human passersby, the robots would simply freeze, each waiting for the other to move first. "The humans would have to actually go down and pull them apart," she says. Seah says Changi has about 50 robots, from eight manufacturers.
Meet L.A.'s firefighting robot. RS3 can battle flames too dangerous for humans
With its bright-yellow armored body, grippy tank-like treads, plow nose and water cannon, the Los Angeles Fire Department's latest piece of equipment looks more like a Star Wars sidekick than a firefighting assistant. But this mini robot tanker is an inferno buster that pack a powerful punch of water or foam and can go where firefighters otherwise can't. The LAFD on Tuesday became the first fire department in the nation to acquire the Robotics Systems 3, a droid on steroids. LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas said firefighters put their lives on the line when battling blazes. This year, 11 LAFD crew members were severely injured when a fireball engulfed four downtown buildings after a massive explosion that was ignited by hazardous materials.

Lessons From My Standoff With an Autonomous Sidewalk Robot
One afternoon last month, as I was crossing a busy four-lane street that runs through the University of Pittsburgh campus, I looked up to see a robot blocking my path. Over the summer, several four-wheeled, knee-high robots had been roaming campus, unmarked and usually with a human handler several feet behind. Recently they'd multiplied, and now they were flying solo. They belonged to Starship Technologies, I learned, an autonomous delivery service rolling out on college campuses across America. As a chemical engineering Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh who uses a power wheelchair, I figured it wouldn't be long before I met one of these bots in a frustrating face-off on a narrow sidewalk.
Sheriff: Suspect in Florida standoff, gunfire, found dead
PANAMA CITY, Fla. – A man suspected of trading wild bursts of gunfire with officers during a long standoff in the Florida Panhandle was found dead Tuesday in a gasoline-soaked apartment after an armored vehicle approached, authorities said. "We were just blessed that we didn't lose multiple officers and citizens today," Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said at a news conference in Panama City, a small Gulf Coast city near the state's famous sugar-sand beaches. He said a robot had to be deployed to check the apartment before officers could enter, finding the man dead. No law enforcement agents were shot or wounded but one person leaving her apartment was injured and in stable condition, he said. "Luckily none of the good guys were hurt," Ford said at a news conference.
Secrets of Silicon Valley review – are we sleepwalking towards a technological apocalypse?
Antonio García Martínez has seen the future and it is terrifying. Which is why he is going to set up home ("this is the drone room right here") on a small island north of Seattle and live out the ravages of post-America, self-sufficiently, with a composting toilet and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. He is nervy and fast-talking, like a survivor who has seen unimaginably horrific things. And he has – he was once a product manager at Facebook. There is going to be a "violent revolt", he says.

A police robot disarmed a violent suspect in Los Angeles County
Last week, on September 8th, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department successfully used a remote-controlled bomb squad robot to snatch a rifle out from under an armed and violent suspect. The standoff between the suspect and an armored SWAT team lasted for more than six hours, but concluded without a single shot fired. "The robot was a game changer here," Capt. Jack Ewell told the LA Times. "We didn't have to risk a deputy's life to disarm a very violent man."
