It Happened One Frame: incredibly accurate video content search with OpenAI CLIP
I love movies, so as a fun exercise for my fast.ai It's named "It Happened One Frame", in tribute to the classic 1934 romantic comedy "It Happened One Night". To use this app, all you need is the link to a Youtube video. For example, you could search "Macaulay Culkin screams with hands on his cheeks" in a Home Alone movie clip and get the screenshots that capture the most iconic scene in this classic. This particular image is so popular that you can easily get it from a google search.

Why China's Communist approach to AI is a blueprint for second place
Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. Pronouns: He/hi (show all) Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. There are few more compelling story lines at the intersection of Wall Street and Fear Street than China's rise to global prominence in the field of artificial intelligence. You don't have to look very far to find a military or financial expert who believes China's AI program will some day surpass the capabilities of its democratic counterparts in Silicon Valley. But, as we've written before, the idea that China is in second place behind the US is a bit misleading. Currently, it would be a huge stretch to call it a race.

Pronouns: He/hi (show all) Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. That's not to say useful quantum computers have actually arrived yet. This is because physics is an incredibly complex and challenging field of study. And the difficulty gets cranked up exponentially when you start adding "theoretical" and "quantum" to the research.

Google's teaching AI how to see and hear at the same time
Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. Pronouns: He/hi (show all) Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. A team of scientists from Google Research, the Alan Turing Institute, and Cambridge University recently unveiled a new state of the art (SOTA) multimodal transformer for AI. In other words, they're teaching AI how to'hear' and'see' at the same time. Up front: You've probably heard about transformer AI systems such as GPT-3.

Google News probably thinks I cover Spiderman because AI is dumb
Google News holds a special place in the world of journalism. When multiple media outlets report on the same topic in a short amount of time, the articles that make it to the main News page are seen by the most people. If you're a musician, you want your song to show up on Spotify's main page. If you're in a comedy movie, you want it to be listed first in the "comedy" section on Netflix. That's why one of my crowning achievements as a journalist was convincing the Google News algorithm I was the queerest artificial intelligence reporter in the world.
If AI only had a brain: Is the human mind the best model to copy?
Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. Pronouns: He/hi (show all) Tristan covers human-centric artificial intelligence advances, quantum computing, STEM, Spiderman, physics, and space stuff. The Holy Grail of AI research is called "general artificial intelligence," or GAI. A machine imbued with general intelligence would be capable of performing just about any task a typical adult human could. The opposite of general AI is narrow AI – the kind we have today.
Untangling Dense Non-Planar Knots by Learning Manipulation Features and Recovery Policies

Robot manipulation for untangling 1D deformable structures such as ropes, cables, and wires is challenging due to their infinite dimensional configuration space, complex dynamics, and tendency to self-occlude. Analytical controllers often fail in the presence of dense configurations, due to the difficulty of grasping between adjacent cable segments. We present two algorithms that enhance robust cable untangling, LOKI and SPiDERMan, which operate alongside HULK, a high-level planner from prior work. LOKI uses a learned model of manipulation features to refine a coarse grasp keypoint prediction to a precise, optimized location and orientation, while SPiDERMan uses a learned model to sense task progress and apply recovery actions. We evaluate these algorithms in physical cable untangling experiments with 336 knots and over 1500 actions on real cables using the da Vinci surgical robot. We find that the combination of HULK, LOKI, and SPiDERMan is able to untangle dense overhand, figure-eight, double-overhand, square, bowline, granny, stevedore, and triple-overhand knots. The composition of these methods successfully untangles a cable from a dense initial configuration in 68.3% of 60 physical experiments and achieves 50% higher success rates than baselines from prior work. When building a model, the data scientist can set the value of hyperparameters for the model. Examples of hyperparameters are the number of layers in an artificial neural network, the number of trees in a random forest, etc. The modeler has the power to decide these hyperparameters, providing the flexibility to train the best model. Flexibility comes at the expense of added complexity. So many choices can be overwhelming.
