Machine Learning Engineer at Neural Magic - Somerville, Massachusetts, United States
Neural Magic is an early-stage AI software company democratizing high performance for deep learning models. Our goal is to reduce the cost and increase the performance of end-users deploying deep learning applications. Based on decades of research at MIT, Neural Magic has developed a software platform that allows developers to sparsify deep learning models to minimize footprint and run on CPUs at GPU speeds. Please look through our website and GitHub repos to get a feel of what we are about. Founded by an award-winning team of computer scientists and researchers out of MIT, we are a venture-backed company headquartered in Davis Square, Somerville, MA.
'Somerville' is a gorgeous twist on alien invasion stories
With his dog in tow, the father goes on a journey that takes him across farmland, through a forest, past the desolate remains of an outdoor music festival and elsewhere. Along the way, he must outfox predatory robots (whose look reminded me of the E.M.M.I. in "Metroid Dread") and patrolling spaceships that vacuum up every living thing in sight. There is a moment somewhat early in "Somerville" when you run past the edge of a forest into a clearing and duck into an abandoned tent to avoid being snatched by one of these flying sentinels. While huddled in the tent, the landscape trembles beneath the bright purplish-white light cast by the alien ship. There is a stark grandiosity to the scene -- as well as to other alien encounters in the game -- that works because of "Somerville's" remarkable art direction.
Autonomous-Truck Developer TuSimple Plans Driverless Road Test This Year
After opening at $40.25, the stock stumbled, slipping about 20%. But it regained much of its loss to close at $40. "I guess it was a rough awakening to life as a public company for a few hours, but we are optimistic," Chief Financial Officer Pat Dillon said. Top news and in-depth analysis on the world of logistics, from supply chain to transport and technology. Chief Executive Cheng Lu said the company is planning to conduct a "driver-out" pilot program without anyone at the wheel in the fourth quarter on a roughly 100-mile run between Tucson and Phoenix. The company has a fleet of 50 trucks it is testing in the U.S. Southwest and approximately 20 more in China, running with two people in the cab.

Clearview Moves to Limit Risk of Police Abuse
Clearview says its software lets authorities plug in photos of people suspected of involvement in crimes and search for other images of their faces from the internet. The company has compiled a massive database of photos by scraping websites, including social-media platforms. Some of the platforms have accused Clearview's scraping efforts of violating their terms of service. Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc. and Microsoft Corp.'s LinkedIn are among those that have sent the startup cease-and-desist orders. Civil libertarians have raised concerns broadly about the use of facial-recognition by law enforcement, and specifically about Clearview.

It's a facial-recognition bonanza: Oakland bans it, activists track it, and pics taken from dating-site OkCupid feed it
We'll be talking about everyone's favorite topic at the moment: facial recognition. First San Francisco, Somerville ... now Oakland: California's Oakland has become the third US city to ban its local government using facial recognition technology, after its council passed an ordinance this week. Council member Rebecca Kaplan submitted the ordinance for city officials to consider earlier this year in June. The document describes the shortcomings of the technology and why it should be banned. "The City of Oakland should reject the use of this flawed technology on the following basis: 1) systems rely on biased datasets with high levels of inaccuracy; 2) a lack of standards around the use and sharing of this technology; 3) the invasive nature of the technology; 4) and the potential abuses of data by our government that could lead to persecution of minority groups," according to the ordinance.

The Weekender: Brazilian dance, 'Jungle Book,' and robot wars - The Boston Globe
It's that time of year: The most prepared of you are carboloading after weeks of training for Marathon Monday, while the least prepared are scrambling to finish your taxes. Either way, surely you'll need some breaks in the pasta and accounting. Should you take your kids to Disney's live-action/CGI remake of its beloved 1967 film "The Jungle Book"? Absolutely, says Ty Burr, who gives three stars to this movie placing "talking animals of almost tactile musculature and movement" in a lush jungle landscape; it holds up right until its overly frenetic final scenes. The jungle beasts are voiced by the likes of Ben Kingsley, Lupita Nyong'o, Bill Murray, Idris Elba, and Scarlett Johanssen, and newcomer Neel Sethi is charming as Mowgli.
