As reported by MIT Technology Review, people at Facebook Research are using Minecraft to train AI that can interact with humans and perform a plethora of tasks as requested. Minecraft is an open world sandbox video game where a seemingly infinite world with different biomes and mobs within which players can build, craft and survive with various online game modes designed by players and create beautiful'blocky' structures from statues to cities. This summer, Dartmouth College's Neukom Institute for Computational Science held its annual Turing Tests in the Creative Arts. A system developed by Thomson Reuters Research Scientist Charese Smiley and Senior Software Engineer Hiroko Bretz took first prize in the poetry contest by creating a sonnet that judges thought most likely to be written by a human. Artificial Intelligence is on the rise, but (for a change) I'm not talking about the great AI panic of 2015. I'm talking about everyday AI that's build into vacuum cleaner robots, Siri, web analytics, and your email. Everybody is fascinated by the technology, and it seems like AI is making huge breakthroughs. I'm sitting at the source of cutting edge AI development (pun intended), and as in any other discipline, 95% of the work has very little to do with coming up with amazing new algorithms to outsmart humans. But more importantly, 95% of how well these AI systems perform also has nothing to do with smarter algorithms.
