Best Fitbit Models for Beginners, Athletes, and Kids (2026)
These are my favorites, whether you're new to fitness, an athlete, or a parent shopping for your kid. It's been five years since Google officially acquired Fitbit for a reported $2.1 billion, grabbing hardware and software teams that also absorbed assets from Pebble, which Fitbit itself acquired in 2016. So, how have things changed? Well, for starters, Fitbit is now Google Fitbit. It's not the most imaginative of name changes, and it hasn't stuck in consumers' minds, but the good news is that Fitbit devices remain some of the most user-friendly and welcoming fitness trackers available.

Domestic abusers are increasingly using AI, smartwatches and other technology to attack and control their victims, a domestic abuse charity says. Record numbers of women who were abused and controlled through technology were referred to Refuge's specialist services during the last three months of 2025, including a 62% increase in the most complex cases to total 829 women. There was also a 24% increase in referrals of under-30s.

23 Ways You're Already Living in the Chinese Century
It's everything you wanted for the United States--but done better in China. China's political leaders laid out an ambitious industrial plan: By 2025, they pledged, their country would be a world capital, with the goal of moving from "Chinese speed to Chinese quality, the transformation of Chinese products to Chinese brands." This is the difference, they wrote, between "Made in China" and "Created in China." At WIRED, we never take what the government (ours or anybody else's) says at face value. Still, as journalists, we respect the ability to hit a deadline.

Brain Gear Is the Hot New Wearable
Smartwatches are cool and all, but have you considered wearable neurotech? Ten years ago, a Fitbit was about as sophisticated a wearable as you could get. Then came the sleeker, more unassuming Oura ring . Now there's a new breed of wearables--built for your head. Instead of tracking your step count, heart rate, and skin temperature, these devices are designed to read your brain waves.

The Download: solar geoengineering's future, and OpenAI is being sued
The Download: solar geoengineering's future, and OpenAI is being sued Solar geoengineering aims to manipulate the climate by bouncing sunlight back into space. In theory, it could ease global warming. But as interest in the idea grows, so do concerns about potential consequences. A startup called Stardust Solutions recently raised a $60 million funding round, the largest known to date for a geoengineering startup. My colleague James Temple has a new story out about the company, and how its emergence is making some researchers nervous. So far, the field has been limited to debates, proposed academic research, and--sure--a few fringe actors to keep an eye on.

Pebble Index: Everything You Need to Know About the 75 Smart Ring
You can speak into the Pebble Index to have it remember things or set reminders, timers, and tasks. Pebble is on a roll--happily skipping along a calm lake, if you will. The resurrected smartwatch company recovered its trademarked name a few months ago, shipped all its new Pebble 2 Duo watches, and is about to start shipping the Pebble 2 Time, which alone received more than 25,000 preorders. But the company is already moving on to some new hardware: the Pebble Index 01 . And unlike most other smart rings, the Pebble Index doesn't measure your heart rate or track your sleep.

OpenAI Locks Down San Francisco Offices Following Alleged Threat From Activist
A message on OpenAI's internal Slack claimed the activist in question had expressed interest in "causing physical harm to OpenAI employees." OpenAI employees in San Francisco were told to stay inside the office on Friday afternoon after the company purportedly received a threat from an individual who was previously associated with the Stop AI activist group. "Our information indicates that [name] from StopAI has expressed interest in causing physical harm to OpenAI employees," a member of the internal communications team wrote on Slack. "He has previously been on site at our San Francisco facilities." Just before 11 am, San Francisco police received a 911 call about a man allegedly making threats and intending to harm others at 550 Terry Francois Boulevard, which is near OpenAI's offices in the Mission Bay neighborhood, according to data tracked by the crime app Citizen.
