Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,341

Al Jazeera

Is Trump losing patience with Putin? Will sanctions against Russian oil giants hurt Putin? How much of Europe's oil still comes from Russia? Russian drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early on Sunday killed at least three people and wounded 29 others, according to Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko. The wounded included seven children, Klymenko said.

Putin confirms he wants all of Ukraine, as Europe steps up military aid

Al Jazeera

Ukraine's European allies pledged increased levels of military aid to Ukraine this year, making up for a United States aid freeze, as Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his ambition to absorb all of Ukraine into the Russian Federation. "At this moment, the Europeans and the Canadians have pledged, for this year, 35bn in military support to Ukraine," said NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte ahead of the alliance's annual summit, which took place in The Hague on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 24-25. "Last year, it was just over 50bn for the full year. Now, before we reach half year, it is already at 35bn. And there are even others saying it's already close to 40bn," he added.

AI deepfakes come of age as billions prepare to vote in a bumper year of elections

The Guardian

Gail Huntley recognised the gravelly voice of Joe Biden as soon as she picked up the phone. Huntley, a 73-year-old resident of New Hampshire, was planning to vote for the president in the state's upcoming primary, so she was confused that a pre-recorded message from him was urging her not to. "It's important that you save your vote for the November election," the message said. "Voting this Tuesday only enables the Republicans in their quest to elect Donald Trump again." Huntley quickly realised that that call was fake, but assumed Biden's words had been taken out of context.

Slovakia's Election Deepfakes Show AI Is a Danger to Democracy

WIRED

Just two days before Slovakia's elections, an audio recording was posted to Facebook. On it were two voices: allegedly, Michal Šimečka, who leads the liberal Progressive Slovakia party, and Monika Tódová from the daily newspaper Denník N. They appeared to be discussing how to rig the election, partly by buying votes from the country's marginalized Roma minority. The fact-checking department of news agency AFP said the audio showed signs of being manipulated using AI. But the recording was posted during a 48-hour moratorium ahead of the polls opening, during which media outlets and politicians are supposed to stay silent.

Natural Numerical Networks for Natura 2000 habitats classification by satellite images

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Natural numerical networks are introduced as a new classification algorithm based on the numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations of forward-backward diffusion type on complete graphs. The proposed natural numerical network is applied to open important environmental and nature conservation task, the automated identification of protected habitats by using satellite images. In the natural numerical network, the forward diffusion causes the movement of points in a feature space toward each other. The opposite effect, keeping the points away from each other, is caused by backward diffusion. This yields the desired classification. The natural numerical network contains a few parameters that are optimized in the learning phase of the method. After learning parameters and optimizing the topology of the network graph, classification necessary for habitat identification is performed. A relevancy map for each habitat is introduced as a tool for validating the classification and finding new Natura 2000 habitat appearances.

This Flying Car Soars 1,500 Feet High, Seats Two and Goes On Sale in 2021

#artificialintelligence

A sports car capable of switching from road vehicle to aircraft in only three minutes has successfully flown 1,500 ft (460 m) in the air of Slovakia during a test flight, according to a video from the developers shared on YouTube. Explosive footage of the AirCar -- which the Slovakian firm KleinVision developed -- shows the vehicle driving to a runway before halting to deploy its wings, with which it soared majestically into the open sky. As the fifth prototype of the flying car, developers say it could be perfect for leisure and self-driving adventures -- and perhaps even as a commercial taxi service. No details on price were revealed for the futuristic vehicle -- but as of writing it can go roughly 620 miles (1,000 km) in one shot, and might be seen in the air and on public roads starting next year. We can't emphasize this enough: the public might see flying cars sweeping through the air in 2021.
