An influencer who made up a prank video claiming she used AI to catch her boyfriend cheating told Fox News her skit was a farce, but the voice-cloning technology she used to power the trick was not, and the skit was inspired by real scams. Mia Dio, a social media influencer with over 5 million TikTok followers, filmed a video of her using artificial intelligence to clone her boyfriend Billy's voice to see if he had cheated on her. The inspiration for the viral video came from reports of AI voice-cloning scams, she told Fox News. Dio used voicemails left by her boyfriend Billy to recreate his voice using AI software.


Sequential Kernelized Independence Testing

Independence testing is a classical statistical problem that has been extensively studied in the batch setting when one fixes the sample size before collecting data. However, practitioners often prefer procedures that adapt to the complexity of a problem at hand instead of setting sample size in advance. Ideally, such procedures should (a) stop earlier on easy tasks (and later on harder tasks), hence making better use of available resources, and (b) continuously monitor the data and efficiently incorporate statistical evidence after collecting new data, while controlling the false alarm rate. Classical batch tests are not tailored for streaming data: valid inference after data peeking requires correcting for multiple testing which results in low power. Following the principle of testing by betting, we design sequential kernelized independence tests that overcome such shortcomings. We exemplify our broad framework using bets inspired by kernelized dependence measures, e.g., the Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion. Our test is also valid under non-i.i.d., time-varying settings. We demonstrate the power of our approaches on both simulated and real data.

In early 2016, Microsoft announced Tay, an AI chatbot capable of conversing with and learning from random users on the internet. Within 24 hours, the bot began spewing racist, misogynistic statements, seemingly unprovoked. The team pulled the plug on Tay, realizing that the ethics of letting a conversational bot loose on the internet were, at best, unexplored. The real questions are whether AI designed for random human interaction is ethical, and whether AI can be coded to stay within bounds. How do you know when a gadget has become part of the American cultural zeitgeist? When it gets its own Saturday Night Live routine, apparently. The comedy show ran a skit (US-only) on May 13th pitching the "Amazon Echo Silver," an imaginary smart speaker aimed at the "greatest generation." Not surprisingly, that means lots of stereotypical jokes about seniors: the Silver is extremely loud, repeats itself and will answer back if you say any name that sounds even vaguely like Alexa. Naturally, you can only order it with a check or money order.
