Shenmue voted the most influential video game of all time in Bafta poll
It is a game about love and identity, but it also has forklift truck races. It is a game about bloody revenge, but while you're waiting to retaliate, you can buy lottery tickets and visit the arcade. When Bafta recently asked gamers to vote on the most influential game of all time, I'm not sure even the most ardent Sega fans would have gambled on the success of an idiosyncratic Dreamcast adventure from 1999. Yet the results, released on Thursday morning, show Shenmue at No 1, with perhaps more predictable contenders Doom and Super Mario Bros coming in second and third respectively. How has this happened, especially considering the game was considered a financial failure at the time of its release, falling short of recouping its then staggering development costs (a reported 70m, which would now get you about a third of Horizon Forbidden West or Star Wars Outlaws)?
Sega Dreamcast at 20: the futuristic games console that came too soon
The Dreamcast looked like nothing else out there. A lighter box than the uniform black or grey, four joypad ports, a bizarre controller with a memory card that had its own screen and worked as a separate miniature games console. The name – a portmanteau of Dream and Broadcast – was strangely ethereal for a games console (Sega had apparently gone through 5,000 possibile monikers to get here). When a prototype was shown to the press in the summer of 1998, there was no Sega logo. This was a new dawn.

This week in games: Call of Duty and Battlefield bound for battle royale, Shenmue comes to PC
We are well and truly in the grips of the battle royale era at this point, with rumors this week pegging a PUBG-style mode coming to both Call of Duty and Battlefield in the fall. At this point the question's not whether we see a new battle royale game at E3, it's how many we see. This is gaming news for April 16 to 20. Humble's habitually giving away games nearly every weekend it seems, and the trend continues this week with Satellite Reign. A blend of real-time tactics game and open-world adventure, it was intended as a successor to Syndicate--the original isometric one from the '90s, not the 2012 reboot.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is in production, according to reports
Grand Theft Auto 6 is on its way, according to a report. Developers Rockstar have begun work on the follow up to GTA 5, which was released in 2013 and is by many measures the most successful and expensive game in history, according to a report from TechRadar. The company hasn't yet settled on a location and it isn't clear exactly when the new game will be released. It might not be released for some years yet – GTA V came five years after its predecessor. The game is unlikely to be set outside of the US, according to the same report.
