Radar navigation for autonomous cars can 'see' through smoke, dust and fog
For autonomous cars to be able to navigate, their optic sensors--like cameras and laser--require a clear view. Now, researchers at รrebro University have successfully improved the precision in radar sensors for navigation to such a degree that the sensors can be used in autonomous cars, making them for safe driving whatever the weather. "The advantage with radar is that it works in all weather conditions and can'see' through smoke and dust," says Daniel Adolfsson, doctoral student in computer science at รrebro University. With this new method, an autonomous car that has traveled 100 meters, is able to determine where it has traveled with a precision of 1 meter. That is an improvement of the radar sensors' positioning system by 1 meter.

Federal researchers are looking for updates and feedback on a video analytics initiative regarding ethical technology development, as government agencies plan to incorporate more artificial intelligence research and systems into their operations. The Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program, a federally-funded research organization that specializes in advanced information technology solutions, issued a request for comment on its updated guidance on federal computer vision and AI technology research. Originally published in March 2020, the NITRD's Federal Video and Image Analytics Research and Development Action Plan is open to public comments and suggestions on how to improve the plan's key pillars to bridge noted gaps in federal research investment, particularly surrounding the incorporation of responsible AI. "As we move into new and novel applications for technology, we must be cognizant of potential harm that AI and other technologies can bring into society, such as identifying and discriminating against certain individuals," a NITRD spokesperson told Nextgov. "The VIA Team seeks input from the public on potential revisions to the VIA R&D action plan to reflect changes in technology and the socio-technical environment--how humans and technology are interrelated in the workplace and in the broader society." The VIA team is particularly interested in revision suggestions that mitigate potential risks related to individual rights and privacy, while establishing "a foundation for human rights" belying AI implementation.

The high-tech hound uses sensors and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to'hear' and'see' its environment โ and can even be taken for walks. "It's really very similar to a real dog," says Ma Jie, chief technology officer at Weilan, the company behind the product. The Nanjing-based creators say their robot dog โ which moves at a speed of almost 15 kilometres (nine miles) per hour and spins on the spot like an excited puppy โ is the fastest on the market. With four metal legs it is more stable than a real dog, Ma explains as one of his team swiftly kicks it to prove the point.
Baby-mounted cameras teach AI to 'see' through a child's eyes
The way that babies learn about and navigate the world could prove to be a good model for training artificial intelligence. AIs don't learn as efficiently or flexibly as children. To explore why, Brenden Lake and his colleagues at New York University turned to the SAYCam data set, which was published this year. It contains video footage from head-mounted cameras worn by young children for a few hours each week over their first three years of life.

Russian researchers from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Valiev Institute of Physics and Technology, and ITMO University have created a neural network that learned to predict the behavior of a quantum system by "looking" at its network structure. The neural network autonomously finds solutions that are well-adapted toward quantum advantage demonstrations. This will aid researchers in developing new efficient quantum computers. The findings are reported in the New Journal of Physics. A wide range of problems in modern science are solved through quantum mechanical calculations.

AI pilot 'sees' runway and lands automatically
An automatic pilot has landed a plane using image-recognition artificial intelligence to locate the runway. At large airports, systems on the ground beam up the position of the runway to guide automatic systems. But in late May a new AI tool landed a small plane carrying passengers, by "sight" alone at Austria's Diamond Aircraft airfield. One expert said it could potentially improve flight safety. The new system, developed by researchers at the technical universities of Braunschweig and Munich, processes visual data of the runway and then adjusts the plane's flight controls, without human assistance.
MIT Claims New Tech Could Help Self-Driving Cars 'See' Through Fog and Dust
Most self-driving car testing takes place in places like California, Arizona, and Nevada, and there's a reason for that. The sensors these cars rely on to navigate are less reliable in poor weather and other low-visibility conditions. But MIT claims to be developing new tech that could help with that. MIT's experimental sensor reads radiation at sub-terahertz wavelengths, which are between microwave and infrared radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum. That means they can be detected through fog and dust, according to MIT.
