The photograph was taken by photographer Valter Binotto, who watched as the glowing structure flashed in the sky at 10:45 local time on November 17. Strangely, this ring bears a striking resemblance to another red halo that was spotted by Mr Binotto in the same location in March 2023. This year's halo was estimated to be 150 miles (200 kilometres) across and hovered at an altitude of around 60 miles (100 kilometres).

Anti-Trump Protesters Take Aim at 'Naive' US-UK AI Deal
Anti-Trump Protesters Take Aim at'Naive' US-UK AI Deal Thousands marched in London to protest President Donald Trump's second state visit. Among them were many environmental activists unhappy with Britain's new AI deal with the US. They played extremely loud music. They let off foul-smelling smoke from a can. Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday in central London to protest against Trump's presence in the UK, accusing the UK government of kowtowing to him by hosting him for a state visit for the second time.

Uncovering ECG Changes during Healthy Aging using Explainable AI
Ott, Gabriel, Schaubelt, Yannik, Alcaraz, Juan Miguel Lopez, Haverkamp, Wilhelm, Strodthoff, Nils
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading global cause of mortality. This necessitates a profound understanding of heart aging processes to diagnose constraints in cardiovascular fitness. Traditionally, most of such insights have been drawn from the analysis of electrocardiogram (ECG) feature changes of individuals as they age. However, these features, while informative, may potentially obscure underlying data relationships. In this paper, we employ a deep-learning model and a tree-based model to analyze ECG data from a robust dataset of healthy individuals across varying ages in both raw signals and ECG feature format. Explainable AI techniques are then used to identify ECG features or raw signal characteristics are most discriminative for distinguishing between age groups. Our analysis with tree-based classifiers reveal age-related declines in inferred breathing rates and identifies notably high SDANN values as indicative of elderly individuals, distinguishing them from younger adults. Furthermore, the deep-learning model underscores the pivotal role of the P-wave in age predictions across all age groups, suggesting potential changes in the distribution of different P-wave types with age. These findings shed new light on age-related ECG changes, offering insights that transcend traditional feature-based approaches.
Adaptive Cholesky Gaussian Processes
Bartels, Simon, Stensbo-Smidt, Kristoffer, Moreno-Muñoz, Pablo, Boomsma, Wouter, Frellsen, Jes, Hauberg, Søren
We present a method to approximate Gaussian process regression models for large datasets by considering only a subset of the data. Our approach is novel in that the size of the subset is selected on the fly during exact inference with little computational overhead. From an empirical observation that the log-marginal likelihood often exhibits a linear trend once a sufficient subset of a dataset has been observed, we conclude that many large datasets contain redundant information that only slightly affects the posterior. Based on this, we provide probabilistic bounds on the full model evidence that can identify such subsets. Remarkably, these bounds are largely composed of terms that appear in intermediate steps of the standard Cholesky decomposition, allowing us to modify the algorithm to adaptively stop the decomposition once enough data have been observed.

Rieoptax: Riemannian Optimization in JAX
Utpala, Saiteja, Han, Andi, Jawanpuria, Pratik, Mishra, Bamdev
We show that many differential geometric primitives, such as Riemannian exponential and logarithm maps, are usually faster in Rieoptax than existing frameworks in Python, both on CPU and GPU. We support various range of basic and advanced stochastic optimization solvers like Riemannian stochastic gradient, stochastic variance reduction, and adaptive gradient methods. A distinguishing feature of the proposed toolbox is that we also support differentially private optimization on Riemannian manifolds.

Machine Learning Student Earns Electrical Engineering Award for a Second Time
Andrew McRae, a Ph.D. student in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) has been recognized with the Colonel Oscar P. Cleaver Award for a second time. McRae is just one of two students to be a double Cleaver Award recipient. "A Ph.D. program is long and tedious and often seems futile. This award is a welcome reminder of how much the work and the graduate experience are worth, just as I hope the degree is for all Ph.D. students. This motivates me to work diligently and with the best of my ability as I study machine learning and as I pursue my future career," said McRae.
Cluelessly Clueless AI
Douglas Hofstadter, a cognitive scientist, recently wrote in the Economist that he believes that GPT-3 is "cluelessly clueless." By this he means that GPT-3 has no idea about what it is saying. To illustrate, he and a colleague asked it a few questions. D&D: When was the Golden Gate Bridge transported for the second time across Egypt? Starship is a robotic supply firm that makes use of autonomous know-how to have cute tiny robots ship groceries and different gadgets straight to your door. The corporate has grown considerably through the years, and it remodeled 3 million deliveries to this date. On this article, we'll take a more in-depth take a look at my expertise utilizing the supply robots within the UK and focus on their affect on society. Earlier than we get to the main points and describe the benefits and downsides of utilizing such an autonomous robotic supply service, we should perceive how the corporate works and how much deliveries it does day by day. US airstrikes target Iran-backed militias in Syria, Iraq
The U.S. military, under the direction of President Joe Biden, carried out airstrikes against what it said were "facilities used by Iran-backed militia groups" near the border between Iraq and Syria, drawing condemnation from Iraq's military and calls for revenge by the militias. Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said the militias were using the facilities to launch unmanned aerial vehicle attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq. It was the second time the Biden administration has taken military action in the region since he took over earlier this year. Kirby said the U.S. military targeted three operational and weapons storage facilities on Sunday night -- two in Syria and one in Iraq. He described the airstrikes as "defensive," saying they were launched in response to the attacks by militias.
