Elon Musk attends the Saudi Investment Forum at the Kennedy Center, on 19 November, in Washington DC. President Nayib Bukele entrusting chatbot known for calling itself'MechaHitler' to create'AI-powered' curricula Elon Musk is partnering with the government of El Salvador to bring his artificial intelligence company's chatbot, Grok, to more than 1 million students across the country, according to a Thursday announcement by xAI. Over the next two years, the plan is to "deploy" the chatbot to more than 5,000 public schools in an "AI-powered education program". Over the past year, the chatbot has spewed various antisemitic content, decried "white genocide" and claimed Donald Trump won the 2020 election .

#RoboCup2025: social media round-up part 2

Robohub

RoboCup2025 took place from 15-21 July in Salvador, Brazil. The event saw around 3000 participants competing in the various leagues. In our first social media round-up post we saw what the teams got up to during the first couple of days of the event. In this second post, we take a look at the action from the final days when the competitions reached their climax. In the #RoboCup2025 @Home OPL Final, our robot performed very well.

Letters from Our Readers

The New Yorker

I have a Salvadoran godson who has been in the black hole of President Nayib Bukele's jails for more than three years. He has not been allowed to send letters or to receive visits from anybody, including lawyers. My family and I have tried, through multiple channels, to get him out, without success. This grotesque mockery of justice is what President Trump is trying to normalize, and it is hard for me to understand how we as a country have fallen so far so fast. How does emulating a dictatorship, like that in El Salvador, prove that America is "great"?

Semantic-based Unsupervised Framing Analysis (SUFA): A Novel Approach for Computational Framing Analysis

Ali, Mohammad, Hassan, Naeemul

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This research presents a novel approach to computational framing analysis, called Semantic Relations-based Unsupervised Framing Analysis (SUFA). SUFA leverages semantic relations and dependency parsing algorithms to identify and assess entity-centric emphasis frames in news media reports. This innovative method is derived from two studies -- qualitative and computational -- using a dataset related to gun violence, demonstrating its potential for analyzing entity-centric emphasis frames. This article discusses SUFA's strengths, limitations, and application procedures. Overall, the SUFA approach offers a significant methodological advancement in computational framing analysis, with its broad applicability across both the social sciences and computational domains.

ICE's Deportation Airline Hack Reveals Man 'Disappeared' to El Salvador

WIRED

A United States Customs and Border Protection request for information this week revealed the agency's plans to find vendors that can supply face recognition technology for capturing data on everyone entering the US in a vehicle like a car or van, not just the people sitting in the front seat. And a CBP spokesperson later told WIRED that the agency also has plans to expand its real-time face recognition capabilities at the border to detect people exiting the US as well--a focus that may be tied to the Trump administration's push to get undocumented people to "self-deport" and leave the US. WIRED also shed light this week on a recent CBP memo that rescinded a number of internal policies designed to protect vulnerable people--including pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and people with serious medical conditions--while in the agency's custody. Signed by acting commissioner Pete Flores, the order eliminates four Biden-era policies. Meanwhile, as the ripple effects of "SignalGate" continue, the communication app TeleMessage suspended "all services" pending an investigation after former US national security adviser Mike Waltz inadvertently called attention to the app, which subsequently suffered data breaches in recent days.

Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek censors itself in realtime, users report

The Guardian

Users experimenting with DeepSeek have seen the Chinese AI chatbot reply and then censor itself in real time, providing an arresting insight into its control of information and opinion. Users might expect censorship to happen behind closed doors, before any information is shared. But that does not seem to be the case in the tool that sent US technology stocks tumbling on Monday. DeepSeek, or the automated guardrails that appear to police its own freedom of "thought" and "speech", brazenly deletes uncomfortable points. Before the censor's cut comes, DeepSeek seems remarkably thoughtful. In Mexico, Guardian reader Salvador asked it on Tuesday if free speech was a legitimate right in China.

Use of Boosting Algorithms in Household-Level Poverty Measurement: A Machine Learning Approach to Predict and Classify Household Wealth Quintiles in the Philippines

Salvador, Erika Lynet

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This study assessed the effectiveness of machine learning models in predicting poverty levels in the Philippines using five boosting algorithms: Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), CatBoosting (CatBoost), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). CatBoost emerged as the superior model and achieved the highest scores across accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score at 91 percent, while XGBoost and GBM followed closely with 89 percent and 88 percent respectively. Additionally, the research examined the computational efficiency of these models to analyze the balance between training time, testing speed, and model size factors crucial for real-world applications. Despite its longer training duration, CatBoost demonstrated high testing efficiency. These results indicate that machine learning can aid in poverty prediction and in the development of targeted policy interventions. Future studies should focus on incorporating a wider variety of data to enhance the predictive accuracy and policy utility of these models.
