Geometric Data-Driven Multi-Jet Locomotion Inspired by Salps

--Salps are marine animals consisting of chains of jellyfish-like units. Their capacity for effective underwater undulatory locomotion through coordinating multi-jet propulsion has aroused significant interest in the field of robotics and inspired extensive research including design, modeling, and control. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of the locomotion of salp-like systems using the robotic platform "LandSalp" based on geometric mechanics, including mechanism design, dynamic modeling, system identification, and motion planning and control. Our work takes a step toward a better understanding of salps' underwater locomotion and provides a clear path for extending these insights to more complex and capable underwater robotic systems. Furthermore, this study illustrates the effectiveness of geometric mechanics in bio-inspired robots for efficient data-driven locomotion modeling, demonstrated by learning the dynamics of LandSalp from only 3 minutes of experimental data. Lastly, we extend the geometric mechanics principles to multi-jet propulsion systems with stability considerations and validate the theory through experiments on the LandSalp hardware. These creatures are capable of efficient underwater undulatory locomotion by coordinating multi-jet propulsion. The structure and locomotion patterns of salps are closely related, which has attracted widespread interest in both biological and ecological research [1-5]. In the field of robotics, salps have attracted increasing attention due to their jet propulsion by expelling water through contraction, efficient underwater locomotion, and multi-unit coordination. Salps and jellyfish have inspired numerous robotic studies on the design of jet propulsion soft robots [6-12] and multi-robot coordination [13-17]. However, in the field of motion planning and control, most studies primarily consider undulatory locomotion by self-propulsion via body deformation [18-23], with only a few works involving underwater locomotion using jet propulsion [24-26]. The units composing biological salps are called "zooids" (i.e., pseudoan-imals or not-quite-animals) because they exhibit many properties of animals but are not independent organisms from the colony. To discuss the general properties of multi-jet locomotion without making claims about the biological systems that inspire them, we use the terminology "chains" and "units" throughout this paper. Quantum Inspired Chaotic Salp Swarm Optimization for Dynamic Optimization

Many real-world problems are dynamic optimization problems that are unknown beforehand. In practice, unpredictable events such as the arrival of new jobs, due date changes, and reservation cancellations, changes in parameters or constraints make the search environment dynamic. Many algorithms are designed to deal with stationary optimization problems, but these algorithms do not face dynamic optimization problems or manage them correctly. Although some optimization algorithms are proposed to deal with the changes in dynamic environments differently, there are still areas of improvement in existing algorithms due to limitations or drawbacks, especially in terms of locating and following the previously identified optima. With this in mind, we studied a variant of SSA known as QSSO, which integrates the principles of quantum computing. An attempt is made to improve the overall performance of standard SSA to deal with the dynamic environment effectively by locating and tracking the global optima for DOPs. This work is an extension of the proposed new algorithm QSSO, known as the Quantum-inspired Chaotic Salp Swarm Optimization (QCSSO) Algorithm, which details the various approaches considered while solving DOPs. A chaotic operator is employed with quantum computing to respond to change and guarantee to increase individual searchability by improving population diversity and the speed at which the algorithm converges. We experimented by evaluating QCSSO on a well-known generalized dynamic benchmark problem (GDBG) provided for CEC 2009, followed by a comparative numerical study with well-regarded algorithms. As promised, the introduced QCSSO is discovered as the rival algorithm for DOPs.


A Schedule of Duties in the Cloud Space Using a Modified Salp Swarm Algorithm

Cloud computing is a concept introduced in the information technology era, with the main components being the grid, distributed, and valuable computing. The cloud is being developed continuously and, naturally, comes up with many challenges, one of which is scheduling. A schedule or timeline is a mechanism used to optimize the time for performing a duty or set of duties. A scheduling process is accountable for choosing the best resources for performing a duty. The main goal of a scheduling algorithm is to improve the efficiency and quality of the service while at the same time ensuring the acceptability and effectiveness of the targets. The task scheduling problem is one of the most important NP-hard issues in the cloud domain and, so far, many techniques have been proposed as solutions, including using genetic algorithms (GAs), particle swarm optimization, (PSO), and ant colony optimization (ACO). To address this problem, in this paper, one of the collective intelligence algorithms, called the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), has been expanded, improved, and applied. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared with that of GAs, PSO, continuous ACO, and the basic SSA. The results show that our algorithm has generally higher performance than the other algorithms. For example, compared to the basic SSA, the proposed method has an average reduction of approximately 21% in makespan.


Route Planning Using Nature-Inspired Algorithms

There are many different heuristic algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problems that are commonly described as Nature-Inspired Algorithms (NIAs). Generally, they are inspired by some natural phenomenon, and due to their inherent converging and stochastic nature, they are known to give optimal results when compared to classical approaches. There are a large number of applications of NIAs, perhaps the most popular being route planning problems in robotics - problems that require a sequence of translation and rotation steps from the start to the goal in an optimized manner while avoiding obstacles in the environment. In this chapter, we will first give an overview of Nature-Inspired Algorithms, followed by their classification and common examples. We will then discuss how the NIAs have applied to solve the route planning problem.


Semi-Automatic Data Annotation guided by Feature Space Projection

Data annotation using visual inspection (supervision) of each training sample can be laborious. Interactive solutions alleviate this by helping experts propagate labels from a few supervised samples to unlabeled ones based solely on the visual analysis of their feature space projection (with no further sample supervision). We present a semi-automatic data annotation approach based on suitable feature space projection and semi-supervised label estimation. We validate our method on the popular MNIST dataset and on images of human intestinal parasites with and without fecal impurities, a large and diverse dataset that makes classification very hard. We evaluate two approaches for semi-supervised learning from the latent and projection spaces, to choose the one that best reduces user annotation effort and also increases classification accuracy on unseen data. Our results demonstrate the added-value of visual analytics tools that combine complementary abilities of humans and machines for more effective machine learning.

Salps have a goofy way of going about life. Each individual in a chain can reproduce sexually to produce a solitary individual, which you can think of as a barrel.


A Smoothed Approximate Linear Program

We present a novel linear program for the approximation of the dynamic programming cost-to-go function in high-dimensional stochastic control problems. LP approaches to approximate DP naturally restrict attention to approximations that are lower bounds to the optimal cost-to-go function. Our program -- the `smoothed approximate linear program -- relaxes this restriction in an appropriate fashion while remaining computationally tractable. Doing so appears to have several advantages: First, we demonstrate superior bounds on the quality of approximation to the optimal cost-to-go function afforded by our approach. Second, experiments with our approach on a challenging problem (the game of Tetris) show that the approach outperforms the existing LP approach (which has previously been shown to be competitive with several ADP algorithms) by an order of magnitude.
