Meet the Palestinian Teens Trying to Win Robotics Gold
Next week, five teens from Palestine will head to Panama to compete in one of the world's largest youth robotics competitions. To win--and then teach STEM to their peers displaced by the Israel-Hamas war. For the entirety of the past year, as the teenage roboticists of Team Palestine have been working on their latest project, their homeland has been engulfed in Israel's war with Hamas . Earlier this month, that all changed. With a fragile ceasefire in place, Israeli forces began to pull back from parts of Gaza, and the teens put the final touches on the project they hope will bring them victory: a robot that can maneuver through a series of simulated challenges based on the effects of climate change.

The Translation of Circumlocution in Arabic Short Stories into English
This study aims at identifying and analyzing circumlocution categories and subcategories in the (SL) and their renditions into the (TL).It is based on criteria proposed for inclusion and exclusion of circumlocution. This study is concerned with the translation of literary texts, specifically short stories, from Arabic into English. It draws on four short stories selected from Arabic famous writers and their parallel translations into English. It hypothesizes that Arabic categories of circumlocution are applicable to English categories of metadiscourse, which include textual and interpersonal items. Nida's (1964) model is adopted in this study to judge the appropriateness in translation the study shows that the translators made serious decisions while opting for various techniques such as addition, subtraction and alteration. In this sense, it investigates whether the translators have successfully and appropriately managed to render the concept of Arabic circumlocution into English or not. The main problems that led to the inappropriate translations were also identified. This study concludes that there are lots of similarities between the categories of circumlocution in Arabic and the categories of metadiscourse in English. These similarities are clear when appropriate renditions are achieved.

What a successful AI team really looks like
As more companies scale AI projects, turning proof-of-concepts into drivers of business transformation, a clearer picture of what it takes to succeed with real-world AI is taking shape. When it comes to AI teams, a broader set of skills are required than previously known, with a particular need for people with experience in operations and in translating AI concepts into business terms and vice versa. Get the latest insights with our CIO Daily newsletter. In fact, enterprises need blended teams to succeed with AI, says Louise Herring, partner at McKinsey & Co. "If you look at the technical side, the emphasis is increasingly on how we can make sure we have production-ready code and we have elements available for reuse throughout the organization," she says. "But the key area of emphasis that we see first of all is about translators: people who can make the connection between the business and the technical side."
Flying high with AI: Alaska Airlines uses artificial intelligence to save time, fuel and money
Given the near 85% fail rate in corporate artificial intelligence projects, it was a pleasure to visit with Alaska Airlines, which launched a highly successful AI system that is helping flight dispatchers. I visited with Alaska to see what the "secret sauce" was that made its AI project a success. Here are some tips to help your company execute AI as well as Alaska Airlines has. Initially, the idea of overhauling flight operations control existed in concept only. "Since the idea was highly conceptual, we didn't want to oversell it to management," said Pasha Saleh, flight operations strategy and innovation director for Alaska Airlines. "Instead, we got Airspace Intelligence, our AI vendor, to visit our network centers so they could observe the problems and build that into their development process.

Haspil, who grew up on Long Island and lived in Brooklyn, was taken into police custody Friday morning in the lobby of another luxury apartment building several blocks from where Saleh was killed, NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said. Information on Haspil's arraignment or a lawyer who could speak on his behalf was not immediately available.

AI steps up in the battle against Coronavirus
We take a look into how artificial intelligence is aiding the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, how effective will AI prove to be? Artificial intelligence may have been hyped - but when it comes to medicine, it already has a proven track record. Oxford-based Exscientia, the first to put an AI-discovered drug into human trial, is trawling through 15,000 drugs held by the Scripps research institute, in California. And Healx, a Cambridge company set up by Viagra co-inventor Dr David Brown, has repurposed its AI system developed to find drugs for rare diseases. Drug discovery has traditionally been slow, but AI is providing much faster results. Healx hopes to turn that information into a list of drug candidates by May and is already in talks with labs to take those predictions into clinical trials.
Will AI speed up discovery of a coronavirus cure?
It feels as if a superhuman effort is needed to help ease the global pandemic killing so many. Artificial intelligence may have been hyped - but when it comes to medicine, it already has a proven track record. There is no shortage of companies trying to solve the dilemma. Oxford-based Exscientia, the first to put an AI-discovered drug into human trial, is trawling through 15,000 drugs held by the Scripps research institute, in California. A Yemeni boy gets lost in a land prowled by US drones
This July 11, 2018, photo, shows a fragment of a US-made missile fired from a drone that struck a vehicle, killing all seven men inside on Jan. 26, 2018, instantly ending their lives, shredding their bodies into pieces, in Shabwa, Yemen. ATAQ, Yemen – Al-Qaida was giving away motorcycles up in the mountains -- that's what the kids in town were saying the day Abdullah disappeared. Early that morning, Mohsanaa Salem woke her 14-year-old son to go buy vegetables. The sun had just risen above the mountain ridge, and winter light filled the ravine where their mud brick house sat at the foot of a slope. "Let me sleep," Abdullah groaned from a mattress on the floor, surrounded by his brothers and sisters. One word from his father, though, and the boy was up and dressed, trudging out of the house to the market in a neighboring village. Three hours later, when he still hadn't returned, Mohsanaa and her husband began to worry.
