Amid drone attacks, activists confront fear and hope on Gaza flotilla
Can Israel survive economic isolation? The activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla remain alert. Wednesday's drone attack on the vessels - heading towards Gaza to break Israel's siege on the Palestinian enclave - is not expected to be the last. As the flotilla, currently travelling in Greek territorial waters, nears Gaza, a larger Israeli attack is expected. Acar is experienced in spotting drones and assessing security risks, having previous experience trying to reach Gaza on June's Madleen flotilla, which Israel intercepted.

Review for NeurIPS paper: Continuous Meta-Learning without Tasks
Additional Feedback: It would help if you could do more to motivate when data of the type MOCA is designed for would occur. It feels a little like an algorithm in search of a problem. When the task switches to a new task, does it ever switch back to a previous task, i.e., the new task is the same as one of the previous tasks? This happens at test time, but can it happen during training? If it can, can the algorithm detect that it has returned to a previously seen task?
Measurement Models For Sailboats Price vs. Features And Regional Areas
Weng, Jiaqi, Feng, Chunlin, Shao, Yihan
In this study, we investigated the relationship between sailboat technical specifications and their prices, as well as regional pricing influences. Utilizing a dataset encompassing characteristics like length, beam, draft, displacement, sail area, and waterline, we applied multiple machine learning models to predict sailboat prices. The gradient descent model demonstrated superior performance, producing the lowest MSE and MAE. Our analysis revealed that monohulled boats are generally more affordable than catamarans, and that certain specifications such as length, beam, displacement, and sail area directly correlate with higher prices. Interestingly, lower draft was associated with higher listing prices. We also explored regional price determinants and found that the United States tops the list in average sailboat prices, followed by Europe, Hong Kong, and the Caribbean. Contrary to our initial hypothesis, a country's GDP showed no direct correlation with sailboat prices. Utilizing a 50% cross-validation method, our models yielded consistent results across test groups. Our research offers a machine learning-enhanced perspective on sailboat pricing, aiding prospective buyers in making informed decisions.

Meet Rikard Grunnan, the Waymo employee who has actually built self-driving cars
Editor's note: Business Insider has been talking with Waymo employees from different parts of the company to learn more about their work. What we discovered were some of the coolest jobs at Alphabet, Waymo's parent company. This is the fourth profile in the series. To read the others, click here. In 2014, when what was then widely known as the Google Car project unveiled an actual vehicle that it had designed and built itself, it was a shot across the bow of the global auto industry. Up to that point, the undertaking -- internally referred to as "Chauffeur" -- struck everybody outside the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, as a rather elaborate science project.

MIT Wind-Powered UAV for Ocean Monitoring
A robotic system, which draws from both nautical and biological designs, has been developed by engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Their innovative robotic glider can skim along the water's surface. The research team say their robotic device rides the wind like an albatross while also surfing the waves like a sailboat. In high wind conditions the robot is designed to stay aloft, much like its avian counterpart, whereas in calmer winds, the robot has a keel it can dip into the water allowing it to ride in the manner of a highly efficient sailboat. The robotic system is relatively lightweight, weighing about 6 pounds, and can cover a given distance using one-third as much wind as an albatross and traveling 10 times faster than a typical sailboat.

Autonomous sail boats are thriving on Geospatial technology!
Oceanic data has always been valued. However, for decades now, the only way to reach the difficult oceanic environments has been expensive. For the longest time, the only solution to gather location information and oceanic data to and from turbulent and hostile waters was to either launch a satellite into space, or to station a stationary buoy. Or if that was not enough, millions of dollars were spent to send a government research vehicle to gather this data. Autonomous sail boats are sailing through the expanse of research vessels and are offering the government, the private industry and the universities, accessible and real-time valuable data on the location of and about fish and wildlife populations, ocean temperatures and climate change.

Ubisoft's 'Assassin's Creed: Origins' Leaked In New Image
An off-screen image of an upcoming "Assassin's Creed" game has leaked online, with reports claiming that the new entry into the franchise will be called "Assassin's Creed: Origins." The off-screen image of "Assassin's Creed: Origins" was posted on Reddit by a user with the handle "shoutouttoashraf." The username is speculated to be referring to Ashraf Ismail, a Ubisoft employee that also worked on "Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag" and is also known to be working on the still-unannounced game, according to Eurogamer. A source has also confirmed to the gaming news site that the leaked image is legitimate. The leaked photo shows a player character on a wooden sailboat.
