DOJ permits attorneys without immigration case experience to be temporary judges amid major backlog

FOX News

Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, R-Fla., joins'America's Newsroom' to discuss Florida's crackdown on illegal immigrant truck drivers after the death of three Americans. In an apparent effort to address the millions of backlogged immigration cases, the Justice Department made a rule change to allow attorneys without immigration law experience to act as temporary immigration judges. The DOJ's Office of Immigration Review published the rule in the federal register Thursday, which removes the requirement that temporary immigration judges have substantive prior experience in immigration law. Jurists who are approved by Attorney General Pam Bondi may serve as immigration judges, which represents a tide change after more than 100 judges were fired or bought out by the Trump administration earlier in 2025. The DOJ hopes that by expanding the net as to who may hear immigration-related cases, the more than three million case backlog may finally be assuaged.

Dungeons & Dragons causes controversy with rule change over identity

FOX News

"Races" are now "species" in the beloved game Dungeons & Dragons, which recently marked its 50th anniversary, irking some loyal fans. "Some character traits have been divorced from biological identity; a mountain dwarf is no longer inherently brawny and durable, a high elf no longer intelligent and dexterous by definition," a report in The New York Times explains. "And Wizards of the Coast, the Dungeons & Dragons publisher owned by Hasbro, has endorsed a trend throughout role-playing games in which players are empowered to halt the proceedings if they ever feel uncomfortable." The company also now suggests that extended Dungeons & Dragons campaigns begin with sessions allowing players to lay out their expectations and which topics they wish to avoid, which could include sexual assault or drug use, the Times writes. "What they're trying to do here is put up a signal flare, to not only current players but potential future players, that this game is a safe, inclusive, thoughtful and sensitive approach to fantasy storytelling," said Ryan Lessard, a writer and frequent Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master, according to the report.

Under the legislation, law enforcement, federal security agencies and the FAA would be allowed to identify drones flying through their jurisdiction, the FAA said.

(Photo by Annie Mulligan for The Washington Post via Getty Images) The California Department of Motor Vehicles will soon allow light-duty autonomous vehicles to be tested in a commercial setting on public roads. That means that delivery vehicles weighing less than 10,001 pounds (which includes Class 1 and 2 passenger trucks and vehicles, small delivery vans, scooters and the like) will soon be delivering groceries, pizza and who knows what else in the Golden State. Obviously, Arizona has been cool with this for a while, which is why we've seen fully autonomous Waymo rides in that state already. KRCR reports that California's new rules are similar to what's been allowed in the state so far, with distinctions for testing with a safety driver in the car, without anyone inside and whether or not the vehicles can be tested on public roads. As of December 5th, there are 65 companies that have a permit to test autonomous vehicles on public roads in California with a safety driver in the vehicle.

NFL-AWS partnership hopes to reduce head injuries with machine learning – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Today at AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell joined AWS CEO Andy Jassy on stage to announce a new partnership to use machine learning to help reduce head injuries in professional football. "We're excited to announce a new strategic partnership together, which is going to combine cloud computing, machine learning and data science to work on transforming player health and safety," Jassy said today. NFL football is a fast and violent sport involving large men. Injuries are a part of the game, but the NFL is hoping to reduce head injuries in particular, a huge problem for the sport. A 2017 study found that 110 out of 111 deceased NFL players had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Atlantic League to debut robot umpires and allow players to steal first base

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

The Atlantic League, an independent baseball league, is rolling out a new revolutionary rule and will debut robot umpires to start the second half of the season. On Wednesday, during the league's All-Star Game in York, Pennsylvania, robots will call balls and strikes for the first time in a professional game, according to The Washington Post. The league will also allow batters to steal first base -- yes, steal first -- on a pitch not caught cleanly, similar to a dropped third strike. Except, the runner can attempt to reach first during any count. Using robots will still include a human element, however.

Judge extends block on Trump birth control rules across US

BBC News

A US federal judge has blocked new Trump administration regulations on birth control from applying across the entire country. The rules allow employers and insurers to decline to provide birth control if doing so violates their "religious beliefs" or "moral convictions". The rules were to come into effect nationwide from Monday. But the judge in Philadelphia granted an injunction requested by attorneys general in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Judge Wendy Beetlestone ruled that the new rules would make it more difficult for many women to obtain free contraception and would be an undue burden on US states. Her decision follows a similar verdict by a judge in California on Sunday.

Net neutrality activists, state officials are taking the FCC to court. Here's how they'll argue the case.

Washington Post - Technology News

Opponents of the Federal Communications Commission have outlined their chief arguments on net neutrality to a federal appeals court in Washington, in hopes of undoing the FCC's move last year to repeal its own rules for Internet service providers. The legal briefs reflect a widening front in the multipronged campaign by consumer groups and tech companies to rescue the ISP regulations, which originally barred providers from blocking websites or slowing them. With the FCC's changes, Internet providers may legally manipulate Internet traffic as it travels over their infrastructure, as long as they disclose their practices to consumers. The FCC's decision last year to repeal the rules was "arbitrary and capricious," said officials from the state of New York, the California Public Utilities Commission and others in court documents Monday -- asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to overrule the agency. The FCC was too credulous in accepting industry promises "to refrain from harmful practices," the officials said, "notwithstanding substantial record evidence showing that [Internet] providers have abused and will abuse their gatekeeper roles in ways that harm consumers and threaten public safety."

'NBA 2K19' MyLeague, MyGM, Create-A-Player Blog And Interview With Senior Producer Erick Boenisch

Forbes - Tech

If you're a basketball fan, who plays sports video games and franchise modes, you almost certainly know about NBA 2K's stellar MyGM and MyLeague modes. For the last six years, these features have set the standard for franchise mode concepts. While sometimes having room for improvement, MyGM and MyLeague have sat at a table alone when compared to similar modes within other sports video games. I was given an advanced look at the modes' annual blog written by Senior Producer Erick Boenisch and given an opportunity to speak with the 2K and Visual Concepts 16-year veteran about the ins and outs of this year's versions as well as a revamped create-a-player tool. The one from NBA 2K18 was such a step back from what had been previously offered that it caused an outcry amongst the demographic that had become so fond of the option. I haven't had a chance to play with any of those modes as of yet but based on the blog, the interview and follow-up conversations Boenisch and I have had, it would appear that most of the more prominently community-requested features have been added. I had an opportunity to ask about some of the ones that didn't make this year's game as well. There is a lot of information to share, as the blog itself is massive. I'll post what I received as well as some perspective about each section (in italics), as well as follow-up data answers I've been given since the interview. Speaking of the interview, the video version is embedded just below. If you take in all of the information, you're likely a franchise nut like many of us sports gamers, and you should have a solid understanding of the scope of the modes. You can read the blog in its entirety here, complete with Boenisch's introduction and other pieces, but I've captured the meat of each section. For NBA 2K19, we invested a considerable amount of time into MyLEAGUE Online with a unified singular goal: Bring everything that is offline directly into MyLEAGUE Online.
