Before they were robots, they were "androids" or "automatons." The word "robot" is commonly accepted as having arrived in English through -- of all places -- a Czech play. "R.U.R." made its public debut in Prague 102 years ago, yesterday. It would arrive in the States a year and a half later, with Spencer Tracy making his nonspeaking Broadway debut as one of Rossum's titular Universal Robots. The playwright Karel Čapek humbly noted the following decade that he couldn't take full credit for the word's origin.

Introduction to Python
Python is an interpreted, object-oriented, high-level programming language with dynamic semantics. It is high-level built-in data structures, combined with dynamic typing and dynamic binding, make it very attractive for Rapid Application Development, as well as for use as a scripting or glue language to connect existing components together. Python's simple, easy to learn syntax emphasizes readability and therefore reduces the cost of program maintenance. Python supports modules and packages, which encourages program modularity and code reuse. The Python interpreter and the extensive standard library are available in source or binary form without charge for all major platforms and can be freely distributed. Python has been growing in popularity over the last few years.
The Czech Play That Gave Us the Word 'Robot'
By the time his play "R.U.R." (which stands for "Rossum's Universal Robots") premiered in Prague in 1921, Karel Čapek was a well-known Czech intellectual. Like many of his peers, he was appalled by the carnage wrought by the mechanical and chemical weapons that marked World War I as a departure from previous combat. He was also deeply skeptical of the utopian notions of science and technology. "The product of the human brain has escaped the control of human hands," Čapek told the London Saturday Review following the play's premiere. "This is the comedy of science." In that same interview, Čapek reflected on the origin of one of the play's characters: The old inventor, Mr. Rossum (whose name translated into English signifies "Mr.

Python has brought computer programming to a vast new audience
IN DECEMBER 1989 Guido van Rossum, a Dutch computer scientist, set himself a Christmas project. Irked by shortcomings in other programming languages, he wanted to build his own. First, it should be easy to read. Rather than sprawling over line-endings and being broken up by a tangle of curly braces, each chunk would be surrounded with indented white space. Second, it should let users create their own packages of special-purpose coding modules, which could then be made available to others to form the basis of new programs.
