Not to be outdone by Amazon's deluge of hardware announcements last week, set-top box maker Roku is readying two new, low-cost streaming video boxes. Along with the new hardware, Roku is going to work with Google Assistant voice control to make it easier for users to find all the streaming content available for bingeing. Roku said in a briefing last week that it's adding two new 4K streaming boxes: the Roku Premiere and Roku Premiere . These boxes have a similar form factor to Roku's Express line; they're tiny pieces of hardware, much smaller than the remote they ship with, and are so lightweight they come with a strip of tape so you can stick them to your entertainment console. But these tiny Rokus stream 4K HDR video, pack quad-core processors, and come with updated firmware that the company says contributes to a smoother streaming experience.

The first weekend of March Madness, the all-day basketball bonanza that runs from early afternoon to late night from Thursday to Sunday, is my happy place. Other than opening day in baseball, it's my favorite time to watch sports all year.

The new Roku Ultra is in the strange position of being the last $100 streaming box standing. This price used to be the norm on devices like the Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV box, and Google Nexus player. But the market has split: The most popular streaming devices range from $30 to $70, while high-performance boxes like the Apple TV and Nvidia Shield TV range from $150 to $200. That leaves the Roku Ultra in a muddy middle ground. It's neither cheap enough to compete with lightweight streaming sticks, nor powerful enough to take on high-end streaming boxes.

Fresh off a successful IPO, Roku is keen to keep the momentum going. And what better way to do that than to launch a set of new devices, packed with a bunch of free (ad-supported) channels.
