Jubileo: An Open-Source Robot and Framework for Research in Human-Robot Social Interaction

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Human-robot interaction (HRI) is essential to the widespread use of robots in daily life. Robots will eventually be able to carry out a variety of duties in human civilization through effective social interaction. Creating straightforward and understandable interfaces to engage with robots as they start to proliferate in the personal workspace is essential. Typically, interactions with simulated robots are displayed on screens. A more appealing alternative is virtual reality (VR), which gives visual cues more like those seen in the real world. In this study, we introduce Jubileo, a robotic animatronic face with various tools for research and application development in human-robot social interaction field. Jubileo project offers more than just a fully functional open-source physical robot; it also gives a comprehensive framework to operate with a VR interface, enabling an immersive environment for HRI application tests and noticeably better deployment speed.

How Nuro became the robotic face of Domino's – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Pandemic pizza was definitely a thing. U.S. consumers forked out a record-breaking $14 billion to have pizza delivered to their doors in 2020, and nearly half of that total was spent with just one brand: Domino's. "Domino's is the home of pizza delivery," said Dennis Maloney, Domino's chief innovation officer. "Delivery is at the core of who we are, so it's very important for us to lead when it comes to the consumer experience of delivery." The R2X (now known as R2) deftly avoids potholes, falling trees and traffic jams caused by The Noid -- a character created by Domino's in the 1980s to symbolize the difficulties of delivering a pizza in 30 minutes or less.

Smile Like You Mean It: Driving Animatronic Robotic Face with Learned Models

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Ability to generate intelligent and generalizable facial expressions is essential for building human-like social robots. At present, progress in this field is hindered by the fact that each facial expression needs to be programmed by humans. In order to adapt robot behavior in real time to different situations that arise when interacting with human subjects, robots need to be able to train themselves without requiring human labels, as well as make fast action decisions and generalize the acquired knowledge to diverse and new contexts. We addressed this challenge by designing a physical animatronic robotic face with soft skin and by developing a vision-based self-supervised learning framework for facial mimicry. Our algorithm does not require any knowledge of the robot's kinematic model, camera calibration or predefined expression set. By decomposing the learning process into a generative model and an inverse model, our framework can be trained using a single motor babbling dataset. Comprehensive evaluations show that our method enables accurate and diverse face mimicry across diverse human subjects. The project website is at http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~bchen/aiface/

Inventor creates a robotic face to go with speaker

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A gadget enthusiast has created a unique but'terrifying' robotic face to accompany their Amazon Alexa voice controlled speaker. The new gadget can answer questions, report the news, traffic and weather and provide sports scores and schedules using the revolutionary Alexa Voice Service. But an inventor, known as Steve, has created a human-like face to go with his new piece of equipment. In a video, the robot, named'Elvia', can be seen'talking' as Steve speaks to her and the two play a game called Word Master The video, filmed in North America, shows the unusual robot - nicknamed Elvia - 'talk' with moving lips and eyes, reports The Mirror. Steve can be heard saying: 'Alexa, play Word Master'. She replied: 'Hello, and welcome to the amazing Word Master.
