CES 2022: BMW reveals colour-changing all-electric iX that can switches from black to white

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Can't decide on the colour of your next car? Well, BMW has you covered with their all-electric iX Flow, which changes from black to white at the push of a button. The German automobile firm unveiled the chameleon-like sports activity vehicle today at the Consumer Electronics Show, which is being held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The colour changing ability uses the same'E ink' electrophoretic technology built into the screens of e-Book readers, except applied to a special car body wrap. Electrophoresis works by using an applied electric field to separate molecules -- in this case, black and white pigments -- based on their respective electric charges.

A robotic cat can teach us how real animals move

Robohub

In the young discipline of robotics-inspired biology, robots replace experimental animals, allowing researchers to learn about animals under a wider range of conditions than exist in nature or the laboratory. What is the secret behind the steady but oh-so-elegant way in which cats move? That's the subject of a study in Frontiers in Neurorobotics by scientists from Osaka University, who built a novel, 47cm-long and 7.6kg-heavy robotic cat. Based on previous research on the gait of real domestic cats, the authors deduced that key to the cats' sleek movement must lie in a previously unknown reflex circuit, which they call the "reciprocal excitatory circuit between hip and knee extensors". According to their hypothesis, this reflex circuit has two essential features.

The Quest to Make a Robot Cat Walk With Artificial Neurons

WIRED

The little robot finger's favorite color is blue. Wave a handful of blueberries in front of it and the finger will follow, transfixed. If you painted everything around it blue, the robo-digit could well have a heart attack. You can program a robot to fall in love with a color easily enough. But this robot is thinking in a fundamentally different way--not with line after line of complicated code, but with simulated neurons.

Programming expert Rongzhong Li has designed a complex 3D printable robotic cat equipped with artificial intelligence and numerous cool features. The fake feline, which contains an Arduino Pro Mini and a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, has a "Super Hard" classification on hackster.io. Robotic pets have long fascinated the consumer market, with toys like the Sony AIBO enjoying big success. In fact, the legendary AIBO is now back after an 11-year hiatus, to the delight of many. Unfortunately, it comes with a $1,800 price tag.

Scientists look to add AI to robotic cat to help seniors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Imagine a cat that can keep a person company, doesn't need a litter box and can remind an aging relative to take her medicine or help find her eyeglasses. That's the vision of toymaker Hasbro and scientists at Brown University, who have received a three-year, $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to find ways to add artificial intelligence to Hasbro's "Joy for All" robotic cat . The cat, which has been on the market for two years, is aimed at seniors and meant to act as a "companion." It purrs and meows, and even appears to lick its paw and roll over to ask for a belly rub. The Brown-Hasbro project is aimed at developing additional capabilities for the cats to help older adults with simple tasks.

An artificially intelligent'robo-cat' that keeps elderly people company is being developed by scientists. The cat can remind an ageing owner to take their medication or help find their spectacles, and may one day feature prominently in care homes, experts claim. It purrs and asks for belly rubs like a real cat, and is designed to help the elderly stem feelings of loneliness, depression and anxiety.
