The Rise of the Robo-advisor: How Fintech Is Disrupting Retirement - Knowledge@Wharton
Artificial intelligence is changing the world of retirement planning. By using improved datasets and algorithms to efficiently deliver solutions tailored to people's needs, AI can help them save, invest and retire better. One of the hottest trends to emerge in this area in recent years is the use of robo-advisors. These are software programs that use the data supplied by clients to create and automatically manage their investment portfolios. They're gaining in popularity, but are they better than human advisors?

The Terminator is (Robo) Calling – Rule the Robots – Medium
In the AI arms race, Google's I/O conference is akin to Russia's Victory Day parade -- an annual, carefully-orchestrated pullback of the curtains hiding otherwise-secret projects, designed to showcase technical prowess and achievements. This years I/O highlight was Duplex, Google Assistant feature that-- using recurrent neural-network-based AI (and a telephone) -- will schedule appointments for you. To demonstrate, Duplex called two businesses: a hair-salon and a restaurant. With lifelike voices and natural conversation flow -- including appropriate disfluencies (the technical term for "hmms," "uh's", etc.) --Duplex appeared to fool both humans into thinking a living, breathing, potential customer was on the line. By displaying behavior indistinguishable from that of a human, some think Duplex could pass the Turing test.

Expert Opinion: Simon Bussy on Wealth Management - The Fintech Times
Our editor, Nathan Gore, spoke to Simon Bussy, Domain Director of Altus, about the benefits of AI/ML within the Wealth Management sector. What would be your brief outline of the benefits that AI/ML can bring to the Wealth Management sector? The successful firms will be those that demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with technology and recognise that AI – and in particular, machine learning – can help people make better, faster, cheaper decisions. In a world of smart-connectivity, AI is the key to harnessing the power of data, and to a long and sustainable future. While currently AI is being used for very specific wealth management tasks – hedge fund management, robotic stock pickers, 'robo' investment algorithms, client service chatbots, document analysis, RegTech support – increasingly AI will be used to augment business strategy and planning, using the power of data analytics and simulations to help provide answers to critical business questions.

What could a self-learning AI system do for your financial life?
You came home early today. Yeah, I wasn't feeling too well so thought I would have an early night. I have a booming headache and a runny nose. Would you like me to order some cold and flu tablets? They should be with you tomorrow morning before you leave for work. Oh, by the way, I checked your bank account today and you have been good this month.

Robo(t) Boyfriends
I redrew these two and changed up their designs! And they have names now too: Hazel (his "alias" is Rust) and Crys(Crystal) The story behind these two is that Hazel is a lonely, outdated robot in a world of much sleeker, newer models who live beautiful, clean, and exciting lives, while Hazel works a dirty job in repairing older models like himself and larger machines. But on the side, he sells illegal steroids in his garden. Because of this, he's constantly tormented and hurt by a specific group of beautiful models who buy his products; whose lives Hazel envies. One day, as he's selling them the illegal goods, they begin boasting about each other's new, rich, and adoring lovers.
Nissan and Mitsubishi to launch 12 EVs and a 'robo' ride service
Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi are joining forces to produce electric and hybrid cars and become "a global leader in ride-hailing services," they announced. The group, called Alliance 2022, will partner up on 12 electric cars and 40 vehicles with autonomous driving tech by, you guessed it, 2022. "With the emissions rules coming in, it's the end of gas," said Alliance 2022 CEO Carlos Ghosn in a statement. "Between now and 2040 there will be no more diesel and gasoline. This is absolutely a scenario."

When beauty is in the eye of the (robo)beholder
For over a year, I worked as a beauty editor, writing and researching about the products, trends, and people that make us want to look a certain way. And as research for many of the stories I wrote, I consulted with dermatologists, plastic surgeons, makeup artists, aestheticians, and more trying to answer a simple question--how can I make myself more conventionally attractive? "Beauty is confidence," they'd always say, prefacing the real answer. Inevitably, these experts would eventually tell me that you feel more confident, and thus more beautiful, when you look blemish- and wrinkle-free. Naturally, the problem here is the premise.

Arla's robo 'milk maids' are using AI to churn your cheese
Gone are the days of milk maids on stools. At the 56,000-square-metre Arla factory in Taulov, Denmark, cheese production is moving towards complete automation - even when it comes to milking the cows. "The biggest challenge is to keep the variation small within the process," explains senior director Jørgen Greve. "About 70 per cent is automated." Once a robot arm has milked the cows, Arla analyses samples for protein and fat content.
Scaling up robo-advice: Lessons from online supermarkets
Note the similarities between this business model and an online supermarket (online retailers). Discounting other factors, such as distribution logistics and differences in regulations, the fundamentals are the same: a commoditised online offering with no'human touch' at the point of sale. Even consumer demographics are similar – young, tech-savvy professionals, looking for cheaper, easy-to-use and anytime/anywhere self-service options. Online supermarkets use extensive segmentation analysis and branding to acquire and retain customers. A seamless integration of data, analytics and technology enables a personalised shopping experience.
