Neural Information Processing Systems

This paper revisits visual representation in knowledge-based visual question answering(VQA)anddemonstrates thatusingregionalinformation inabetterway can significantly improve the performance. While visual representation is extensively studied in traditional VQA, it is under-explored in knowledge-based VQA even though these two tasks share the common spirit, i.e., rely on visual inputtoanswerthequestion.

REVIVE: Regional Visual Representation Matters in Knowledge-Based Visual Question Answering

Neural Information Processing Systems

This paper revisits visual representation in knowledge-based visual question answering (VQA) and demonstrates that using regional information in a better way can significantly improve the performance. While visual representation is extensively studied in traditional VQA, it is under-explored in knowledge-based VQA even though these two tasks share the common spirit, i.e., rely on visual input to answer the question. Specifically, we observe in most state-of-the-art knowledge-based VQA methods: 1) visual features are extracted either from the whole image or in a sliding window manner for retrieving knowledge, and the important relationship within/among object regions is neglected; 2) visual features are not well utilized in the final answering model, which is counter-intuitive to some extent. Based on these observations, we propose a new knowledge-based VQA method REVIVE, which tries to utilize the explicit information of object regions not only in the knowledge retrieval stage but also in the answering model. The key motivation is that object regions and inherent relationship are important for knowledge-based VQA. We perform extensive experiments on the standard OK-VQA dataset and achieve new state-of the-art performance, i.e., 58.0 accuracy, surpassing previous state-of-the-art method by a large margin (+3.6%). We also conduct detailed analysis and show the necessity of regional information in different framework components for knowledge-based VQA. Code is publicly available at https://github.com/yzleroy/REVIVE.

Trump wants to revive the lagging US shipbuilding industry. Here are the hurdles he faces

FOX News

President Donald Trump is turning his attention to the U.S. shipbuilding industry, which is leagues behind its near-peer competitor China, and recently signed an executive order designed to reinvigorate it. Trump's April 10 order instructs agencies to develop a Maritime Action Plan and orders the U.S. trade representative to compile a list of recommendations to address China's "anticompetitive actions within the shipbuilding industry," among other things. Additionally, the executive order instructs a series of assessments regarding how the government could bolster financial support through the Defense Production Act, the Department of Defense Office of Strategic Capital, a new Maritime Security Trust Fund, investment from shipbuilders from allied countries and other grant programs. But simply throwing money at the shipbuilding industry won't solve the problem, according to Bryan Clark, director of the Hudson Institute think tank's Center for Defense Concepts and Technology. "It is unlikely that just putting more money into U.S. shipbuilding โ€“ even with foreign technical assistance โ€“ will make U.S. commercial shipbuilders competitive with experienced and highly-subsidized shipyards in China, Korea, or Japan," Clark said in a Monday email to Fox News Digital.

Dating Apps Destroyed In-Person Romance. Now They're Trying to Revive It.

Slate

In the hour before the Chaotic Singles x Tinder dating event kicked off at the Moxy South Beach in Miami, the sky opened and the downpour began. The patrons of the nearby restaurant where I'd been dining were caught in the deluge, the rain soaking them as though they'd just swum in directly from Biscayne Bay. This perhaps had a cleansing effect--some sort of spiritual clean slate upon which to begin the night's mingling endeavor. But on a more literal level, it meant that the hotel's gorgeous rooftop would no longer be the venue for the night's icebreakers and hopeful attempts at romance. Instead, the event would be held in the lobby, alongside guests of the hotel.

Finally, Australia sees video games are important โ€“ but it can't be only because they make money

The Guardian

If you head to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Acmi) in Melbourne right now, you can visit Out of Bounds, an exhibition that "explores the limits of videogames". There you can watch The Grannies: a documentary about four game developers and friends in Melbourne who, while playing as a posse of elderly cowboys in the Playstation game Red Dead Redemption 2, went looking for adventure in the glitchy out-of-bounds areas beyond the game's map. Alongside The Grannies at Acmi, attendees can play Red Desert Render, which was made by game developer Ian MacLarty, one of the four Grannies. Red Desert Render takes the experience of exploring weird, glitchy virtual spaces. It's not dissimilar to many of MacLarty's other games, which are often free, very Australian, and experimental, like Southbank Portrait and Ned Kelly.
