Google employee made redundant after reporting sexual harassment, court hears
A senior Google employee has claimed she was made redundant after reporting a manager who told clients stories about his swinger lifestyle and showed a nude of his wife. Victoria Woodall told an employment tribunal she was subjected to a campaign of retaliation by the company after whistleblowing on the man who was later sacked. Google UK's internal investigation found the manager had touched two female colleagues without their consent, and his behaviour amounted to sexual harassment, documents seen by the BBC in court show. The tech giant denies retaliating against Woodall and argues she became paranoid after whistleblowing and began to view normal business activities as sinister. In her claim, Woodall says her own boss subjected her to a relentless campaign of retaliation after her complaint also implicated his close friends who were later disciplined for witnessing the manager's behaviour and failing to challenge it.

An LLM-based Agent Simulation Approach to Study Moral Evolution
Ziheng, Zhou, Tang, Huacong, Bi, Mingjie, Kang, Yipeng, He, Wanying, Sun, Fang, Sun, Yizhou, Wu, Ying Nian, Terzopoulos, Demetri, Zhong, Fangwei
The evolution of morality presents a puzzle: natural selection should favor self-interest, yet humans developed moral systems promoting altruism. We address this question by introducing a novel Large Language Model (LLM)-based agent simulation framework modeling prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies. This platform is designed to probe diverse questions in social evolution, from survival advantages to inter-group dynamics. To investigate moral evolution, we designed agents with varying moral dispositions based on the Expanding Circle Theory \citep{singer1981expanding}. We evaluated their evolutionary success across a series of simulations and analyzed their decision-making in specially designed moral dilemmas. These experiments reveal how an agent's moral framework, in combination with its cognitive constraints, directly shapes its behavior and determines its evolutionary outcome. Crucially, the emergent patterns echo seminal theories from related domains of social science, providing external validation for the simulations. This work establishes LLM-based simulation as a powerful new paradigm to complement traditional research in evolutionary biology and anthropology, opening new avenues for investigating the complexities of moral and social evolution.

How Trump's policies are affecting early-career scientists--in their own words
How Trump's policies are affecting early-career scientists--in their own words Every year, we recognize extraordinary young researchers on our Innovators Under 35 list. Recent honorees told us how they're faring under the new administration. Every year celebrates accomplished young scientists, entrepreneurs, and inventors from around the world in our Innovators Under 35 list . We've just published the 2025 edition . This year, though, the context is pointedly different: The US scientific community finds itself in an unprecedented position, with the very foundation of its work under attack . Since Donald Trump took office in January, his administration has fired top government scientists, targeted universities individually and academia more broadly, and made substantial funding cuts to the country's science and technology infrastructure .

Prepared, not paranoid: What you need to know to protect yourself from a possible terror attack
Former FBI special agent Nicole Parker joins'Fox & Friends First' to discuss why the U.S. is on'high alert' for Iranian threats inside the country after U.S. airstrikes on three nuclear sites. In times like this, you hear the concern from your neighbors. You talk about it with people at the gym. It's the topic of conversation over morning coffee -- from small towns to big cities -- "Are we going to see an increase in terror attacks here at home?" Now, there are news that Iranian "sleeper cells" pose a dangerous threat. Such cells could carry out attacks on U.S. citizens in retaliation for recent military operations in Iran, it's understandable that Americans are feeling concerned for their safety here at home.

U.S. says Russia response to Ukraine drone attack not over, expects more strikes
The United States believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin's threatened retaliation against Ukraine over its drone attack last weekend has not happened yet in earnest and is likely to be a significant, multi-pronged strike, U.S. officials said. The timing of the full Russian response was unclear, with one source saying it was expected within days. A second U.S. official said the retaliation was likely to include different kinds of air capabilities, including missiles and drones. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity. They did not detail Russia's expected targets nor elaborate on intelligence matters.

Russia drone strike kills 5 in Ukraine after Putin promised retaliation in Trump call
'Outnumbered' panelists weigh in after President Donald Trump announced he had a'good conversation' with Vladimir Putin, noting that peace with Ukraine will not be'immediate' as Russia'will have to respond' to the recent airfield attack. A Russian drone strike in Ukraine left at least five people dead, including a 1-year-old and his mother and grandmother, in an attack occurring just hours after President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that six drones hit the city of Pryluky, sparking a rescue operation that ended in tragedy for one first responder in particular, who lost his wife, daughter and grandson in the attack. This photo provided by the Ukrainian Emergency Service shows the fire following Russia's drone attack in the Pryluky, Chernihiv region, Ukraine, on Thursday, June 5, 2025. "Last night, Russia struck Pryluky in the Chernihiv region with six attack drones. A rescue operation continued throughout the night. Unfortunately, there have been injuries and fatalities. One of the rescuers arrived to deal with the aftermath right at his own home -- it turned out that a'Shahed' drone had struck exactly his house. Tragically, his wife, daughter, and one-year-old grandson were killed. And this is already the 632nd child lost since the full-scale war began," Zelenskyy wrote on X after the attack.

Palestinian commander killed in Lebanon as Israel, Hezbollah exchange fire
A suspected Israeli drone attack on a car in southern Lebanon has killed a commander from a coalition of Palestinian armed groups as tensions remain high along the Israel-Lebanon border. The attack targeted a car in the city of Sidon on Wednesday morning, killing Khalil al-Maqdah, a senior officer of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. A Hamas commander was also killed in the same region earlier this month. Meanwhile, the Israeli army launched a series of overnight air raids targeting what it said were ammunition depots belonging to Lebanon's Hezbollah group in the country's Bekaa region, killing one person and wounding at least 20 others. Hezbollah said it launched dozens of rockets towards northern Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.

Former OpenAI, Google and Anthropic workers are asking AI companies for more whistleblower protections
A group of current and former employees from leading AI companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic have signed an open letter asking for greater transparency and protection from retaliation for those who speak out about the potential concerns of AI. "So long as there is no effective government oversight of these corporations, current and former employees are among the few people who can hold them accountable to the public," the letter, which was published on Tuesday, says. "Yet broad confidentiality agreements block us from voicing our concerns, except to the very companies that may be failing to address these issues." The letter comes just a couple of weeks after a Vox investigation revealed OpenAI had attempted to muzzle recently departing employees by forcing them to chose between signing an aggressive non-disparagement agreement, or risk losing their vested equity in the company. After the report, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the provision "genuinely embarrassing" and claims it has been removed from recent exit documentation, though it's unclear if it remains in force for some employees. The 13 signatories include former OpenAI employees Jacob Hinton, William Saunders and Daniel Kokotajlo.

Hackers Could Use ChatGPT to Target 2024 Elections
The rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has increased the potential for a wide range of attackers to target elections around the world in 2024, according to a new report by cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike. Both state-linked hackers and allied so-called "hacktivists" are increasingly experimenting with ChatGPT and other AI tools, enabling a wider range of actors to carry out cyberattacks and scams, according to the company's annual global threats report. This includes hackers linked to Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran, who have been testing new ways to use these technologies against the U.S., Israel, and European countries. With half the world's population set to vote in 2024, the use of generative AI to target elections could be a "huge factor," says Adam Meyers, head of counter-adversary operations at CrowdStrike. So far, CrowdStrike analysts have been able to detect the use of these models through comments in the scripts that would have been placed there by a tool like ChatGPT.
