Prompt Tuning for Item Cold-start Recommendation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The item cold-start problem is crucial for online recommender systems, as the success of the cold-start phase determines whether items can transition into popular ones. Prompt learning, a powerful technique used in natural language processing (NLP) to address zero- or few-shot problems, has been adapted for recommender systems to tackle similar challenges. However, existing methods typically rely on content-based properties or text descriptions for prompting, which we argue may be suboptimal for cold-start recommendations due to 1) semantic gaps with recommender tasks, 2) model bias caused by warm-up items contribute most of the positive feedback to the model, which is the core of the cold-start problem that hinders the recommender quality on cold-start items. We propose to leverage high-value positive feedback, termed pinnacle feedback as prompt information, to simultaneously resolve the above two problems. We experimentally prove that compared to the content description proposed in existing works, the positive feedback is more suitable to serve as prompt information by bridging the semantic gaps. Besides, we propose item-wise personalized prompt networks to encode pinnaclce feedback to relieve the model bias by the positive feedback dominance problem. Extensive experiments on four real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our model over state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, PROMO has been successfully deployed on a popular short-video sharing platform, a billion-user scale commercial short-video application, achieving remarkable performance gains across various commercial metrics within cold-start scenarios

Why Netflix Features Black Actors in Promos to Black Users

WIRED

Last week, Netflix users raised concerns that the company was targeting black users by race in the way it promoted films--highlighting black characters who sometimes had only minor roles in a movie. The debate began after Stacia L. Brown, creator of the podcast Charm City, tweeted a screenshot of the promotion she was shown for Like Father, featuring two black characters, Leonard Ouzts and Blaire Brooks, who had "20 lines between them, tops," rather than the movie's famous white stars, Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer. Brown, who is black, posted a handful of other examples where Netflix highlighted black actors, presumably to entice her to watch, even though the films' casts were predominantly white. In response, Netflix issued a carefully worded statement emphasizing that the company does not track sensitive demographic data about its users. "Reports that we look at demographics when personalizing artwork are untrue," the company said in a statement.

'Star' Season 1 Spoilers: Episode 7 Synopsis Released; What Will Happen In 'Black Wherever I Go'? [VIDEO]

International Business Times

After Star steals the spotlight from Alexandra, the group is forced to deal with a tragedy as tensions rise on "Star" Season 1, episode 7, titled "Black Wherever I Go." "Things get out of control during a rally Derek (Quincy Brown) organizes in response to the sudden loss of a close friend," the synopsis teases. In the promo for the Fox series, the group deals with the death of one of the shop's hair stylists, who was shot by a police officer. While in pain, Derek suggests taking their grief and putting it into a protest. In the "Star" Season 1, episode 7 "Black Wherever I Go" clip, Derek can be seen asking Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) if the group can sing for the protest, however, she doesn't want to because she is afraid Star (Jude Demorest) won't take it seriously. Simone (Brittany O'Grady) and Carlotta (Queen Latifah) are also pictured attending the peaceful protest, but it looks like things get out of hand because Alexandra can be seen getting taken away by a police officer.

Bayesian Approach for Sales Time Series Forecasting

#artificialintelligence

In our previous post, we showed the examples of using linear models and machine learning approach for forecasting sales time series. Sometimes we need to forecast not only more probable values of sales but also their distribution. Especially we need it in the risk analysis for assessing different risks related to sales dynamics. In this case we need to take into account sales distributions and dependencies between sales time series features (e.g. One can consider sales as a stochastic variable with some marginal distributions.

Amazon Go and the Future of Work

#artificialintelligence

First, the basics: Amazon has created a small Seattle grocery store that allows customers to just take what they want off the shelves and leave, without having to wait in line or check out with a cashier. In addition to traditional grocery items, Amazon Go will also feature meal kits with fresh ingredients to be prepared at home. For now, the 1,800 square foot Amazon Go store is only open to Amazon employees, but the company plans to open the doors to the public in early 2017. The company didn't announce further expansion plans, but based on the slick promotional video released yesterday, it seems evident this isn't a one-off idea. Earlier this year, Business Insider reported that Amazon was planning a grocery store pilot program, and may ultimately aim for 2,000 markets around the US in the next decade.

'Passengers' Movie Trailer Is Different From First Version Released By Jennifer Lawrence At CinemaCon

International Business Times

Sony Pictures appeased movie fans on Tuesday by releasing the highly anticipated trailer for "Passengers" to the public, but it isn't the first promo for the film. The 2-minute teaser offers different scenes than what was shown at 2016 CinemaCon during Sony Pictures Presentation in April. While the original trailer for the Jennifer Lawrence-Chris Pratt sci-fi flick opened with just Pratt's character Jim waking up 90 years too soon into his century-long voyage to another planet, the new trailer immediately jumps into Lawrence's character Aurora's romance with him. The first scene (above) shows Jim, a mechanic, using a robot to ask Aurora, an accomplished New York journalist, out on a date. Of course, the two are the only awake passengers aboard the Starship Avalon with the rest of the guests in hibernation, so their choice of partners is limited.
